Getting to know Jennifer Allran

My name is Jennifer J. Allran, PMHNP-BC, and I’m a board-certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with over 16 years of experience in mental health care. I completed both my Bachelor and Master of Science in Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I received the Academic Achievement Award for both programs. My clinical approach is grounded in trauma-informed and attachment-based care, and I’m certified in Traumatic Stress Studies through the Trauma Research Foundation. Over the years, I’ve worked in a variety of settings, including hospital-based psychiatry, outpatient group practices, clinical research, and private practice. Before becoming a Nurse Practitioner, I worked in social services, including Child Protective Services, housing, and staff training. That experience continues to shape how I understand the broader context of mental health and the systems people are navigating. Outside of my clinical work, I spend a lot of time in nature—hiking, backpacking, and gardening—and I also enjoy reading and painting. Those parts of my life keep me grounded and often influence how I think about balance, creativity, and the process of change. I approach care as a collaborative process, integrating medication management with a broader understanding of each person’s experiences, goals, and challenges.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me tends to feel conversational, collaborative, and grounded. I focus on understanding the full picture—not just symptoms, but how those symptoms connect to your life, relationships, and day-to-day experience. Many people I work with describe feeling like things look stable on the outside, but internally they feel overwhelmed, unmotivated, or disconnected from a sense of meaning or direction. I see treatment as a shared process. Rather than applying a standard approach, I work with you to develop a plan that fits what you’re actually experiencing and what you want to move toward. That might include medication, but it often also involves looking at patterns, habits, and the broader context of your life. My goal is to create a space where you feel comfortable being honest, asking questions, and actively participating in your care. I’m particularly drawn to working with people who feel stuck or disconnected despite having a lot of things “working” on the outside, and who are looking for a more intentional and grounded way of living.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first visit is focused on getting a clear understanding of what’s been going on for you. We’ll talk through current symptoms, relevant history, and what you’re hoping to get out of treatment. I spend time looking at patterns and contributing factors, including past experiences with therapy or medication. From there, we develop a plan together. That may include medication, but it often also includes looking at sleep, stress, routines, relationships, and other factors that influence how you’re feeling. Follow-up visits are used to track progress, make adjustments, and continue refining the approach based on how things are evolving. The process is ongoing and flexible, with an emphasis on making sure the treatment continues to feel relevant and helpful over time.
