“The visit was great. We had a few technical issues but they were resolved quickly and efficiently. The session was wonderful and we discussed a lot in what was a short time. We scheduled a second session. Pricing is very reasonable if you don't have insurance. ”

Getting to know Jennifer Black

I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner specializing in depression, anxiety, ADHD, autism and intellectual disability, dementia, bipolar disorder, and psychosis. I provide medication management and supportive therapy. I have experience as a nurse, a family nurse practitioner, and now a psychiatric provider in treating these issues. I hold a Bachelor’s degree from Chamberlain University, a Master’s in Family Health Nursing from Chamberlain University - Addison, and a Certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from Maryville University. I believe in treating the whole person, and my goal is to help you achieve the highest quality of life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am very open and laid back. I have many life experiences that have educated me and lead me on this path of helping others. I believe that we can make the world a better place- one person, one day at a time. Each one of us is important and necessary.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Initially, when meeting clients I get background information. If I find we need more screenings than were available online before the appointment, we will do that as well. I enjoy teaching about medications and disease processes. I will present options for care and discuss them with the client. We will come to a decision together and a plan to move forward. My goals are for you to be on the least amount of medication for the shortest amount of time. Now, some people require medication for mental wellness like others require medication for hypertension or diabetes. Then there are others who need it for only a short while. Typically, those people will need medications for at least 6 months, usually a year. I will see them often (1 x per month) while we are making changes, then it pushes out to every three months when stable... The goal is every 6 months if on chronic meds or transition to your PCP. If you are needing frequent changes, you will be seen frequently. If you are on controlled substances, you will also be seen more frequently. You may also be subject to random drug screens. Benzodiazepines are not to be taken during the same time period as opioids (same day, week, or month) and stimulants will be monitored closely. Benzodiazepines are also short-term medications. I don't like to prescribe them, though they do have their place.
