What should a new client know about working with you?

As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I am dedicated to providing exceptional medication management for mental health conditions through an approach that combines evidence-based medicine with compassionate, individualized care tailored to each person I serve. Effective psychiatric treatment requires not only the right medications, but also a strong therapeutic relationship built on mutual respect, honest communication, and genuine trust between provider and patient. Your first appointment will include a comprehensive evaluation where I take meaningful time to understand your complete story and lived experience. I will conduct a detailed assessment covering your current symptoms, their duration and severity, impact on daily life and functioning, previous treatments you've tried, medication history, existing medical conditions, family psychiatric background, and present stressors or challenges you're facing. My prescribing philosophy is both systematic and flexible, following established clinical guidelines while remaining responsive and adaptive to your unique needs and circumstances. I am intentional and thoughtful about medication choices, carefully considering effectiveness, potential side effects, safety factors, interactions with other medications, and practical aspects that affect your daily life. I begin with appropriate starting doses, monitor your progress closely and attentively, and adjust treatment based on how you personally respond rather than following rigid protocols. I explain diagnoses in accessible, everyday language, present treatment options without medical jargon, set realistic expectations for outcomes and timelines, and address concerns openly and honestly without dismissiveness. I schedule regular follow-up appointments, systematically evaluate medication effectiveness and tolerability, make timely adjustments when needed, and remain available and accessible between scheduled appointments for urgent concerns.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Your first appointment is devoted to understanding you and your psychiatric needs through a comprehensive evaluation. We'll explore your symptoms thoroughly—their nature, duration, severity, and how they're affecting your relationships, career, sleep quality, self-care, and daily functioning. I'll review your complete medical and psychiatric history, family mental health background, prior treatment experiences and what worked or didn't work for you, current medications and supplements, and any substance use. After the initial evaluation, we'll develop an individualized treatment plan together based on your unique needs and circumstances. I'll explain my diagnostic impressions clearly in accessible language, discuss medication options in detail including how they work in your brain and body and potential side effects to monitor, and address all your questions and concerns thoroughly. Follow-up appointments generally run around 30 minutes, though the length adjusts based on what you need that particular day and how your treatment is progressing. We'll review your progress since our last visit, evaluate how your medications are performing and how well you're tolerating them physically and emotionally, and address any concerns or questions that have come up. I genuinely value honest, open dialogue about your experience—what's helping, what feels difficult or isn't working, side effects you're experiencing, and whatever questions are on your mind. I treat a range of conditions including depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety, ADHD, trauma-related diagnoses including PTSD, OCD, and other mood and anxiety conditions. Each person's experience is unique, and treatment is personalized accordingly. Between sessions, I remain accessible and responsive for any urgent concerns or significant changes in your symptoms or circumstances.
