What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting mental health care can feel intimidating, especially if you’re not sure what to expect. At KM Psychiatry, I want you to know that you do not have to have everything figured out before you walk through the door. My approach is centered on listening first. I take the time to understand what you’re experiencing, how it is affecting your daily life, and what you hope to get out of treatment. I believe you should feel comfortable asking questions, sharing concerns, and being honest about what is or isn’t working for you. Your treatment is a collaborative process. I will provide professional guidance and evidence-based recommendations, while also taking your preferences, goals, experiences, and comfort level into consideration. If medication is part of your treatment plan, we will discuss the potential benefits, risks, alternatives, and what to expect rather than simply putting you on a medication and sending you on your way. You can also expect that progress may look different for everyone. Mental health treatment is not about being “perfect” or changing everything overnight. We will focus on meaningful, realistic steps toward helping you feel more stable, functional, and like yourself again. Most importantly, you will be treated with compassion and without judgment. Whether this is your first experience with psychiatric care or you have been in treatment before, my goal is for you to feel heard, respected, and supported. You’ve already taken an important step by seeking help. I look forward to meeting you and working together toward your goals.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach to care is individualized, collaborative, and focused on helping you feel comfortable and understood. First Visit: We begin with a thorough conversation about what brings you in, your current symptoms, medical and mental health history, medications, lifestyle, and personal goals. This gives me a better understanding of the whole person—not just a diagnosis or a list of symptoms. We will also discuss your concerns, answer questions, and determine the best next steps together. Assessment & Treatment Planning: After gathering the necessary information, we work together to identify appropriate treatment options. Depending on your needs, this may include medication management, supportive interventions, lifestyle recommendations, referrals, or coordination with other healthcare providers. I believe you should understand your treatment options and have a voice in decisions about your care. Follow-Up Visits: Follow-ups are an opportunity to check in on how you are doing, evaluate your response to treatment, discuss any changes or concerns, and make adjustments when needed. We will also talk about what is working, what may not be working, and what additional support could be helpful. Ongoing Care: Mental health treatment is a process, not a one-time appointment. My goal is to build a therapeutic relationship based on trust, communication, and consistency. As your needs change, your treatment plan can change with you. Throughout the process, I strive to provide a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment where you can be open and honest. My goal is not simply to manage symptoms, but to help you work toward improved functioning, stability, and overall quality of life.
