What should a new client know about working with you?

One thing patients often share after our first appointment is that they finally feel like someone explained what is actually going on. I put real effort into that: translating clinical thinking into plain language, walking through what a diagnosis means, what treatment options exist, and why I am recommending what I am recommending. My approach is collaborative and unhurried. I draw on my background in outpatient psychiatry, intensive programs, inpatient care, and years of teaching to bring both depth and clarity to each appointment. Whether you are new to psychiatric care or coming in after a difficult experience elsewhere, you can expect to feel heard, informed, and respected.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. I ask about your current concerns and how long they have been present, your mental health and medical history, current medications and supplements, family history, and what has helped or not helped in the past. I also complete a safety assessment and make sure we have talked through what you are hoping to get out of treatment. Before that visit ends, I will share my clinical thinking with you: what I believe is going on, what the diagnosis options are, and what I am recommending and why. I do not send you home with a prescription and a follow-up date without a real explanation. Follow-up visits are structured around progress. We review what is improving, what is not, any medication questions or side effects, and whether the plan needs adjusting. I also draw on my experience across outpatient, intensive, and inpatient settings to recognize when additional support might help, and I will walk you through those options if they come up.
