Getting to know Joey Bukai

Hi! I'm a psychotherapist and psychiatric nurse practitioner providing remote psychotherapy and medication management in New York. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, ADHD, and insomnia through an approach that integrates psychotherapy and/or medication management. If you've been feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck—whether it's managing stress, finding focus, navigating relationships, or figuring out your direction—I understand how hard it can be to know where to begin. Rather than just addressing symptoms, I work with the whole person—exploring your story, your patterns, and the interplay between mind and body that shapes your daily experience. Together, we'll create space for you to understand yourself more deeply, build on your strengths, and find practical ways to enhance your well-being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe addressing one's mental health is a deeply personal journey of self-discovery. My goal is to help you understand your thoughts and emotions more fully, explore how your past shapes your present, and develop practical ways to move toward your goals—including medication when it feels right for you. Together, we'll explore what makes you who you are: the beliefs you hold about yourself and the world, your spiritual life if that's meaningful to you, and the bigger questions about purpose and meaning. I'm interested in the whole picture, not just what brings you to treatment. Mental health treatment works best when it's consistent and intentional, so I encourage weekly sessions where we can build real momentum. For medication management, we'll find a rhythm that supports your needs—whether that's monthly check-ins or more frequent visits. Either way, progress happens through our collaborative effort, both during our time together and in what you practice between sessions. I also believe the therapeutic relationship itself matters deeply. I welcome your honest feedback—positive or negative—because openness is what makes this work effective. Therapy can be a rare space where you can say things you might hesitate to share elsewhere. You won't be judged here for frustration, disappointment, or even anger with me. This is your space to speak openly, feel truly heard, and be met with compassion, respect, and understanding.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach begins with understanding your goals and how your past experiences connect to what you're facing now. This usually takes 1-4 sessions, after which I'll share my initial impressions and we'll collaborate on a path forward. From there, we'll explore how you learned to relate to yourself and others, examining patterns in your thoughts, relationships, and mental health over time. Recognizing these patterns is the first step toward changing them—helping you feel more grounded and confident in your life. Therapy requires a real investment of time, energy, and money, so I want you to get the most from our work together. Please share feedback with me openly—if something isn't working, if you have questions about my approach, or if you're unsure about anything. I value collaborative conversation and want this to feel right for you. If after giving it a genuine try you don't feel we're a good fit, I'll support you in finding someone who is.

Joey is a wonderful therapist. He is compassionate, empathetic, and non-judgemental. Joey makes me feel comfortable and heard. I highly recommend considering Joey as your therapist.
Hes awesome! It's not easy finding someone to talk to, that ACTUALLY listens. Joey is that therapist!! He truly listens and gave me tips and advise of how to deal with what I was going though at the time. I didn't feel like I was in a DR office either, it fealt like we built a healthy patient therapist relationship and I was looking forward to my next session.
Joey took the time to assess me and realize my real underlying issue , unlike others out there who take time into a really sensitive manner. Joey also sends me reminders everyday helping me keep positive which you will not find anywhere and he can be reached anytime no matter he is there for you.
