What should a new client know about working with you?

What to expect during a neuropsychological evaluation: A neuropsychological evaluation is typically conducted over two visits. During the initial visit, the neuropsychologist will ask the patient and, if appropriate, family members to explain what has been happening in the patient’s life that led to the evaluation. We will then ask follow-up questions related to the patient’s medical and psychosocial history in an attempt to fully understand the referral question before initiating testing. Testing begins following the conversation about the patient’s history. The patient is evaluated alone using a variety of neuropsychological tests, which are used to help answer questions related to the reason for referral. It is a non-invasive process including a variety of written and verbal tasks that may assess mood and behavioral symptoms, as well as cognitive tests of attention, memory, language, reasoning, and other skills. Most patients find the process interesting and engaging. It is important that the patient is well-rested, nourished, and equipped with any hearing aids or visual aids, such as glasses or contact lenses. Once testing is completed, your neuropsychologist will analyze the data and a detailed report will be written including a summary of the history, neuropsychological test results, diagnostic considerations, and recommendations for treatment. The patient returns for a feedback session, during which we will review the information contained in the report and answer questions.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our department consists of three fellowship trained neuropsychologists. We’re now accepting outside referrals for adult neuropsychological evaluations (ages 16+). Evaluations are conducted in the Neurosciences suite on Holy Name’s main campus (718 Teaneck Road), but all scheduling is done through our Psychiatry practice. When submitting a referral, please fax or email the script with diagnosis code(s) and relevant paperwork including the last visit note and any relevant diagnostics (e.g., scans, labs, etc.). This documentation is needed for the pre-authorization process, which takes about 14 business days upon submission. The evaluation is conducted during a 3-4 hour initial visit. Most patients are scheduled a week later for the feedback appointment. Reports are brief, targeted and typically sent back to the referring provider within a week or two following the feedback appointment.
