“I have struggled getting myself help for so many years, afraid of saying the things outloud. I am so happy I found someone who made me feel safe to discuss the random things on my mind and the trauma I have experienced in life. I do not expect four decades of life experiences to be fixed, but I now know I am on the right path. ”

Getting to know Dr. Johnni Cansler

I'm a psychiatric nurse practitioner who's been there. I specialize in ADHD, Depression, anxiety, PTSD, and LGBTQ+ care. I'll show up, I'll listen, and I'll meet you where you're at. I love to treat neurodivergent folks with real problems, because that's who I am. I get it. I have the best job in the world. I have been working in psychiatry for about 20 years first as a CNA, and then as a registered nurse, and specifically prescribing for about 5 years. I've worked in community mental health, substance, inpatient, outpatient, intensive outpatient, and many other settings over the years. I treat any age and any type of patient. I offer excellent, non judgmental care. Most of what I do is telehealth. If specific need for in person visits is required, it can be arranged. Otherwise I like to keep it simple. Outside of prescribing I am faculty at a university, teaching and supporting others who are working toward becoming psychiatric prescribers. I also team up with pharmaceutical companies to educate other prescribers about psychiatric symptoms and how to effectively and efficiently treat them using the most evidence-based medications available.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I take a relaxed, supportive approach to care and believe in meeting people exactly where they are. My focus is always patient-centered and collaborative, and I strive to create a space that feels safe, respectful, and completely free of judgment. Whether you're navigating a new diagnosis or have been managing your mental health for years, we'll work together to find a plan that fits you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During our first appointment, I focus on what’s going on right now. While your history matters, I prioritize understanding your current symptoms so we can find a medication plan that helps you feel better and function more fully—starting today. I’m comfortable diagnosing and prescribing in the first visit when appropriate, and we’ll follow up frequently at first to fine-tune things together. Once we find what works for you and things are feeling steady, we can space appointments out more if you prefer, or keep them more frequent to keep a closer eye on things.

In-network insurances

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance

More information on payments and coverage

At this time, I accept only United Healthcare and Cigna and Aetna as of July 7th. However, I am in the process of becoming credentialed with Blue Cross Blue Shield, MODA, and Providence. I’m happy to provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement, and I’ll update my profile as more in-network insurance options become available.

Immediately loved them. Clearly very smart, respectful, and great at what they do.

First appointment was really great, but there was no contact capabilities to troubleshoot an issue with my pharmacy in order to pick up my prescription to address symptoms. I was then noshowed at my 2week follow up appointment. Received multiple reminders for the appointment and then couldn’t get an answer. Waited 15 minutes to be safe. Nothing. Not even a phone call. I’ll be looking for another provider.

Dr Cansler is absolutely one of the most patient, knowledgeable, realistic, and empathetic doctors I have ever seen. Thank you! ? ??

Dr. JJ was amazing. I was extremely concerned about my insurance situation and she immediately put my mind at ease that we would work through it. Our appointments flew by because I had so much to talk about in her specialty and trauma and PTSD made it so much easier to explain the reality of what it’s like to live in a life with such severe and nearly unbearable trauma symptoms every day. She hasn’t even remained patient as I have been able to log on two different times through my phone in the app and she still, I hope, is willing to accept me as a patient. ???

Dr Johnni Cansler is hands down the most amazing mental health provider I have ever met with! So easy to talk to, never felt judged and always felt heard. Very empathetic. I feel like a better person and I have only had one visit. I feel blessed to have found Dr. Cansler. 10 out of 10 recommend!

JJ was amazing! I am definitely going to continue seeing them. They were thoughtful, articulate, and explained their process very thoroughly and didn’t make me feel bad for any reason.

JJ is the best provider, by far, that I've ever worked with. She's highly intelligent and thinks outside the box. She's not some robot psychiatrist that just throws the same meds at you whether they help you or not. She's a great listener, and that makes it feel like you're talking with a personal friend, not some stranger that's only money-motivated.

JJ is smart, kind, and listens. She makes meds make sense, treats you like a real human, and somehow makes even really tough appointments feel manageable. Would 100% recommend to anyone who wants thoughtful, effective, and seriously good care.
Top notch care. No nonsense. JJ gets it.
JJ is kind, real, and incredibly helpful. She made me feel safe and truly listened to me. She introduced me to Accelerated Resolution Therapy, and with her support, I was able to work through PTSD in a way I never thought possible. I’m so grateful to have found her. Definitely recommend.
Finding a great psych prescriber is like dating... Awkward first meetings and even ghosting. But Dr. Cansler is the exception you hope to find. She's sharp, compassionate, and somehow makes med management feel like a team effort. I’ve never felt better cared for, supported, or mentally stable. 12/10, would absolutely recommend, even to my most skeptical friends.
I can’t thank Dr. JJ enough for the care she’s given my 9-year-old daughter. After being overlooked by four other providers for 2 years because she’s quiet and shy, we finally found someone who truly listened and saw what others missed. She recognized the signs of ADHD right away and treated my daughter with compassion, patience, and respect. Since starting treatment, I’ve seen real, meaningful changes in her confidence, school work, and daily life. It’s made a world of difference for our whole family. I’m incredibly grateful.
JJ is the best psych I’ve ever worked with. From the start, she made me feel safe and never judged me—especially for being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, which had been a sensitive topic for me. She really listens, takes the time to understand what I’m going through, and helps me feel like an equal partner in my care. For the first time, I feel seen, supported, and actually hopeful about my mental health. I’m so grateful to have found her.
I cannot speak highly enough of Dr Cansler as a psychiatric provider. She is not only deeply knowledgeable and clinically skilled, but also incredibly compassionate, thoughtful, and attentive. From the very beginning, I felt seen, heard, and truly understood. Not just as a patient, but as a whole person. What sets her apart is the way she combines evidence-based care with a warm, collaborative approach. I never felt rushed or dismissed. Instead, she took time to explain treatment options, listened carefully to my concerns, and always involved me in decisions about my care. It’s rare to find someone so committed to both clinical excellence and human connection. If you are looking for a prescriber who is insightful, supportive, and genuinely invested in your well-being, I wholeheartedly recommend Dr Cansler.
JJ is the real deal... laid back, down-to-earth, and very smart. After years of feeling dismissed by other providers, I finally found someone who listens, explains things clearly, and treats me like a person. I actually look forward to appointments now, and I always get a good laugh. She’s helped me feel more grounded and hopeful than I’ve felt in years. Highly, highly recommend.
