“Twice now Dr. Slaughter has worked with me to overcome two major back-to-back life stressors that felt almost impossible to overcome alone. Both times he has talked me through my worries and anxieties, without being overly-prescriptive in offering his own personal advice. Rather, he works collaboratively with me at a pace I'm comfortable with, and it is a breeze to get in touch with his secretary via text. He's the paragon of what modern psychiatry should be. ”

Getting to know Dr. Jon Slaughter

I am an integrative psychiatrist providing out-of-network care for adults struggling with anxiety, PTSD/developmental trauma, ADHD, and work or relationship stressors. I earned my Doctor of Medicine from Georgetown University and completed my psychiatry residency at Columbia University, Saint Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center. My primary approach is skills-based psychotherapy, offering practical tools to reduce distress. I incorporate both non-medication treatments and medications as indicated. I also utilize plant medicines to optimize healing, including Medical Marijuana for patients actively engaged in weekly psychotherapy with me, and I make appropriate referrals for psychedelic medicine in the treatment of PTSD. I see individuals for psychotherapy with a focus on Self-compassion and mindfulness, aiming to help them navigate challenges related to relationships, work, and family stressors to experience a richer, more peaceful life. I do not treat individuals with eating disorders, bipolar disorder, substance use disorders, schizophrenia and related disorders, or those with a history of self-injury or frequent suicidal thinking.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My goal is to help you cultivate tools and skills, particularly related to self-compassion, awareness, and non-reactivity, to create the feeling state you want to experience. Most importantly this empowers you, as you have the ability to reduce your distress and determine your emotional state. This also allows us to utilize the lowest amount of medication needed to reduce your symptoms and distress. As this approach requires thoughtfulness and attention all my appointments are 45 minutes long so that I have enough time to truly understand your experience. I help you identify any past difficult or traumatic events, particularly during the developmental period of early childhood, that shaped your experience of being in the world. Addressing these root causes of current symptoms is a powerful to heal and transform your life. I utilize plant medicines with evidence of effectiveness, to include many herbs and medical marijuana, to target insomnia, stress/anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, and depressive symptoms. I refer for psychedelic medicine when I determine if it can be of benefit in treating trauma or depressive disorders.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I see most people for a combination of mindfulness-based psychotherapy and integrative medication management per above. I start with a two session consultation. During the first appointment we speak at length so I can learn about you and what brings you to see me. From this I identify the optimal potential interventions to address your symptoms. During the second appointment we discuss treatment options and I present a possible treatment plan. You then make the final decision on what treatments you want to begin. If you decide to start in treatment prescriptions will be provided at that time. In the appointments during your treatment we monitor how you are feeling and the state of any symptoms. In exploring your feelings and experiences we identify mindfulness and somatic (breathing, etc) skills that can shift your feeling state. We also discuss the role medications can play in an ongoing manner. Collaboratively we decide what combination of these can be most helpful in reducing any distress and suffering to optimize your functioning and quality of life.

He is very kind and knowledgable.
He is best at his knowledge!

Dr. Slaughter always listens and validates my concerns and feelings. His treatment always takes into account my level of comfort and where I'm at. He is caring and highly knowledgeable. I would highly recommend Dr. Slaughter.
    The Best
Dr. Slaughter is without doubt the most compassionate, helpful and listening doctor of any type I've ever seen. He's helped me through difficult times in the past -- and continues to be a healing force in my psychological health.
Not a good visit. This doctor had a misleading website. It said he treated things he doesn't. He's probably for people that don't fit the criteria of any mental illness, but have basic anxiety.
    Excellent, as always
Jon is attentive and insightful. He is brilliant when it comes to empathy, offering perspective and exploring methods of healing that are unique to each patient.
See him. Do it. Fix your life. 10 years of depression - gone. Not taking meds anymore. Meditation, supplements, exercise, diet, and so on. He really is amazing.
Dr slaughter is a rarity in the field if psychiatry ..he is kind, caring, intelligent, naturopathic and above all offers 45 minute sessions as opposed to 15 min med script writing sessions..he is wonderful!!
I would recommend this doctor for someone experiencing minor to semi-intense anxiety disorders or depression, or simply a kind face to talk to. However, if you fall into the pitfalls of an extreme crisis, depth or despair, or suicidal thoughts, I would find someone who specializes in more severe cases and is more readily reached by telephone, simply for your own safety.
I have been a patient of Dr. Slaughter's for several years and in my opinion you could not find a better psychiatrist. He's incredibly learned in his field and open and collaborative in his approach to treatment, and his recommendations often include both Eastern & Western influence. Further, he really listens to the patient, makes himself available if you need something, and you get the sense he genuinely cares. I have referred friends to him and they seem to share my sentiment. He is all-around just a wonderful doctor. I feel quite fortunate to be in his care.
    Outstanding. Couldn't ask for more.
    Terrific.
Per usual Dr Slaughter was encouraging, empathic and supportive in our session. I feel as if he truly listens and makes every effort to understand where I'm coming from. I find that he approaches treatment from the perspective of our joint collaboration, and that he is truly interested in my feedback and in making sure that I am comfortable with the plan that we design. I really like his style. He is a pleasure to work with.
    Excellent every time.
Dr. Slaughter has earned my trust, and I certainly am glad I found him. He provides a rare breadth of expertise ranging from standard treatments of psychotherapy and medication to include, also, "alternative and complementary" treatments. He ranges from standard medication to yoga, from herbs and vitamins to breathing techniques, from practical counseling to diet and exercise promotion. Stepping in to work with me, Dr. Slaughter has been thorough, collaborative, and honest. I already am experiencing very nice improvements in a short time. With a gentle manner, a perceptive mind, and a first-rate medical education behind him, Dr. Slaughter is an excellent resource for problem-solving and well-being.
    Terrific.
Highly recommend Dr. Slaughter! He is great!
First-rate doctor in every way. Outstanding.
I have found Dr. Slaughter to be very thorough, pragmatic, honest, experienced, and knowledgable about a wide range of approaches to solving problems and improving well-being. He cares about the whole person. And I like his collaborative style.
