Getting to know Dr. Joseph Belloir

As a Family Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with years of experience treating clients of diverse backgrounds in multiple settings—such as partial hospitalization programs, homeless shelters, inpatient units, and private practice—I have come to truly value the uniqueness of the human condition. I meet clients where they currently are and work with them to identify where they want to be. I have expertise in managing complex medication regimens and working with clients suffering from substance misuse, ADHD, psychotic disorders, OCD, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and mood disorders. My educational background includes a Master’s in Nursing from Boston College and a PhD in Nursing Science from Columbia University, where I also completed additional graduate study. These experiences have all contributed to my comprehensive approach to patient care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I offer comprehensive and individualized care in a warm, safe, interactive environment and believe in treating the whole person -- mind, body, and spirit. I use a combination of treatment modalities including: - Psychotropic medication including controlled substances where appropriate - Integrative psychotherapy such as psychodynamic combined with cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing - Alternative and complementary medicine such as nutrition and aromatherapy ***Follow-up sessions: 20-40min (up to 2x per month)

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Beginning with the initial session, I strive to understand the client fully -- considering biological, psychological, and social factors -- while simultaneously developing the therapeutic relationship. I tailor my treatment plans to reflect the needs of my clients using evidence-based treatment strategies in order to promote and enhance the recovery and healing process. ***Follow-up sessions: 20-40min (up to 2x per month)

I said this three years ago after my first appointment. Joe is the best doc I have ever had. I always leave feeling like I have a friend. There is something profoundly beautiful to the rare provider that can irradicate the innate heirarchy of patient-doctor relationship. No judgements, always wants what is best for you.

Dr. Joseph is the GOAT! Nothing but deep appreciation for his proactive, professional, and careful listening skills; helping me work through some of my worst times. With Dr. Joe’s guidance/recommendations, I’ve been able to navigate through my day to day issues with so much more productivity along with understanding of myself. I’m forever grateful.
I've been a patient of Joe's for 3 years, and I would highly recommend him to anyone. He's always very professional and attentive to my concerns and takes the time to listen carefully and tailor his approach to my individual needs. Joe creates a safe and supportive environment, and his thoughtful guidance and clinical expertise have made a meaningful difference in my mental health journey. I truly appreciate his consistency, compassion, and dedication to his patients.
I’ve been seeing Joe for 1.5 years now in monthly sessions. I was wary of taking medications at first and voiced my concerns. One thing I appreciated about him is that he never pushed me; he learned my history first, then explained SSRIs in plain language and shared helpful resources over our first four sessions before prescribing anything. That education eased my fears and made starting treatment feel safe. Since beginning an SSRI, my addiction symptoms have improved significantly and I feel steadier and more hopeful. Joe follows up, adjusts thoughtfully, and listens. I highly recommend him.
Working with Dr. Belloir has been extremely helpful through stressful and challenging times. He’s accessible but professional and tremendously knowledgeable. He provides great context and explanation as to why he suggests a particular course of treatment or behavioral change. I highly recommend him.
I am incredibly grateful to have found Dr. Joe as my psychiatrist. I was diagnosed with ADHD as a teenager, but I never truly understood what that meant or how to manage it effectively until I started working with him. Before working with him, I wasn’t properly taking my meds or they weren’t in the right balance. Thanks to his dedication and careful adjustments, my medications are now in a great place, and I feel more stable and focused than I have in years. As a young person who is neurodivergent, I really appreciate how he "gets it" on a deeper level, which has made all the difference in my treatment. Additionally, Dr. Joe has been a tremendous source of support during one of the most challenging times in my life — after my dad passed away. His compassionate and understanding approach helped me navigate those difficult feelings and mental health struggles. I have been seeing him for over two years now, and I genuinely cherish the care and guidance he provides.
Dr. Belloir has approached my mental health journey in a thoughtful, holistic, and integrated manner, allowing me to carve a conscious and intentional path forward.
Dr. Joe has been an absolute pleasure to work with over the past year. His insightful conversations and deep knowledge of medications have made a massive difference for me. He’s always on time, the virtual appointments are super convenient, and he’s incredibly professional and pleasant. Highly recommend!
Dr. Belloir is a very knowledgeable and compassionate psychiatrist. I am very grateful to have a provider who understands the various facets that influence my life and mental health needs. He is extremely educated in issues affecting LGBTQ+ patients and patients with neurodiversity, which is why I selected his practice when I was first looking for a new health care team when I moved to the city. He sees his patients holistically and takes time to listen to their needs as well as their personal circumstances which has not always been my experience with other health care providers, especially psychiatrists. Appointments never feel rushed and I feel genuinely listened to to be understood and provided excellent, cutting-edge, science-informed medical care.
Joe is amazing! Prior to him, I was seeing another provider that wasn’t a great fit for me, but finding Joe was such a blessing. Unlike the previous psychiatric provider, I felt like Joe truly listened to my concerns and was incredibly empathetic to my current situation. What I appreciate most is that he holds me accountable, which is something I need and also appreciate because it makes me feel like I matter.
When selecting a psychiatrist, I felt it was important to seek a professional who understands my experience, which is what led me to Joe. Being gay with adhd, I struggled to find a doctor I felt fully comfortable opening up to and trusting. It’s been two years now, and my experience with Joe has been overwhelmingly positive. Joe Bellior intimately understands the queer neurodivergent experience - through my sessions with Joe, I’ve learned to better manage my anxiety, productivity, and process trauma while providing me with resources to help me on my journey. In medication management, Joe has been helpful in targeting the right mix of meds & dosages, navigating med shortages, and identifying strategies for managing mood fluctuations. I always look forward to my sessions with Joe. His casual yet professional approach makes me feel safe and seen. If you’re LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent and willing to do the work that mental health management requires, I highly recommend Joe Bellior.
Trusting a provider is personal. After losing a loved one to failed care, I was left traumatized and guarded. Dr. Joseph Belloir a rare gem who changed that & makes me feel safe. I’ve spent years searching for someone who understands what it means to live with constant mental noise—focus struggles, emotional sensitivity, time loss, forgetfulness, overstimulation, impulsive moments, and the exhausting cycle of trying to “do better” but feeling stuck. It’s often misunderstood, overlooked, or misread—especially in women. Dr. Belloir adapts to the nuances of your case. The care he provides for patiences is top notch. It’s responsive. It’s grounded. It’s professional. It’s thoughtful. He doesn’t just listen, he hears what you say. He creates a safe space that’s collaborative, comfortable, and educational. He checks in, follows through, and makes you feel like more than a case file. For the first time, I feel cared for—not a diagnosis, but understood. Dr. Belloir has changed my life!
I’ve been seeing Joe for about 2.5 years now, and I honestly don’t know where I’d be without him. Finding the right meds and doses has always been a frustrating, emotional rollercoaster for me, but Joe has been incredibly patient through all of it. He really listens, doesn’t rush, and makes thoughtful changes based on how I’m feeling and he never makes me feel like I’m being “too much.” He’s also super reliable and always on time, and quick to respond to any emails if I have questions or issues with refills. That kind of professionalism and follow-through is something I really appreciate. Joe is the kind of provider who actually makes you feel seen and supported. I can’t recommend him enough!
Dr. Joe has been an excellent psychiatrist for the many years that I've been working with him. He is very attentive and cares deeply about making me feel better. I identify as both LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent and I truly feel that he sees me for who I am which cannot be said for all psychiatrists. I would highly recommend Dr. Joe to anyone who is seeking psychiatric advice in the New York area.
Dr. Belloir is extremely kind, supportive, and informative. For every question I ask, he has an answer! He is a very intuitive practitioner who takes the time to understand the patient’s lifestyle and is precise in treating all symptoms. I also love how holistic solutions are offered in addition to medicinal treatment. It’s great to have such a balanced doctor who is empathic to all degrees.
I've been seeing Joseph for about three years now after several attempts to find a doctor that I felt comfortable with. Joseph has been wonderful to work with in every sense. He is accommodating, diligent, and extremely knowledgeable. Based on my experience, I would highly recommend meeting with Joseph!
I’ve been Dr. Belloir’s patient for over 2 years and he is amazing! Really listens to me and takes the time to fully understand all that is impacting me to then recommend treatment. Always very detailed and empathetic and has helped me finally sleep better and manage my symptoms. The treatment has improved my quality of life tremendously and I am forever grateful for that.
I've been seeing Dr. Joe for a little over a year now and I finally feel like I'm getting the help I need: he listens to my needs and is deeply empathetic. Through his experience as a provider as well as his clinical experience in different types of medications, we finally found the right dosage and combination of meds that address my conditions. I have referred him to many friends of mine in the past. Tbh our mental health industry currently is in desperate need of good providers who genuinely care, and I feel very lucky to have found him.
Joe is a fantastic provider, I've been a patient of his for 3+ years now. He's an accommodating and extremely attentive clinician (both in session and out of session). I also really appreciate his specialized knowledge in ADHD.
Had a great initial meeting with Joe! He makes an effort to ensure he’s fostering a comfortable environment for patients and listens to what you have to say. I am excited to continue working with him.

He is by far one of the best providers I have. He’s so attentive, listens and acknowledges your feelings and concerns. He also responds so quickly if you have to reach out between appts. He’s so on top of appts as well! He’s so great that I even pay out of pocket and had the option to be seen through my pcp and I denied that to keep him!

I have been searching for a psychiatric health care provider for months. I needed someone who could be a partner with my psychologist in my mental health treatment. I thought Dr. Belloir was very nice and professional, and easy to talk and relate to. We spent the full hour in my first visit with him and I really felt like he got a good sense of what I needed and how he could help me. I highly recommend.

If you are searching for a keen, genuine mental health provider who takes great care in developing your treatment, I highly encourage making an appointment with Joseph to see if working with him is the right fit. Joseph has always presented himself with a warm, inviting demeanor and takes the time to listen to my concerns, thoughts, and needs. He presents information concisely and sensitively, which makes it easy for us to have an open dialogue and allows us to find the best course of treatment together. He takes a minimalist, less-is-more approach to pharmacology, meaning he takes care not to add extraneous medications, employing the necessary medications to treat the issues at hand, and providing supplemental support materials to aid your treatment between sessions. The process of receiving psychiatric care with Joseph has been positive since day one and continues to be so today. 10/10. Thanks, Joseph!
Joe has been the most attentive and helpful psychiatrist I have ever had! I only started my medication journey 2 years ago and have had issues getting ahold of psychiatrists/they’ve required appointments in order to get refills. Unlike these experiences, he has been incredibly flexible! He is super quick to respond and helpful in ensuring that insurance is accepted (I’ve had several scenarios before where I’ve been overcharged because they did not care to double confirm). Whenever I need a refill, he is very quick to process and support, with helpful advice on dosage. Cannot recommend Joe enough! (:
Joe was super friendly and attentive and I look forward to our future sessions! So glad I chose him when I was looking for a psychiatrist
