“I can’t sing enough praises about Dr. Cohen. Finding a doctor, especially a psychiatrist, that’s a good fit is difficult to do, but I found that in Dr. Cohen. Unlike my previous doctors, he really listens and understands your concerns and helps you to find a solution. He really takes his time, even goes out of his way, to help you on your mental health journey. He has gone above and beyond the duties of a psychiatrist, and now that I’ve found him, my search is done. He is so outstanding that I don’t want to find anyone else, and after a few months of seeing him, the practice realized that I wasn’t covered to see him due to an error. Even though they all went out of their way to find me a new doctor, I decided that I wanted to stay with him, and that I would pay out of pocket to continue my care. In the meantime, he and options MD reached out to my insurance company and came to an agreement that I could continue my care with him and I would be covered moving forward. ”

“I’ve been seeing Dr Cohen for 9 months very regularly and he’s by far my favorite doctor. He’s extremely responsive and always gets back to me quickly when I’m having issues, and never makes me feel like I’m a burden for reaching out to schedule appointments sooner than originally planned. My favorite thing about seeing Dr Cohen is his approach to helping provide new solutions to my problems. He’s very consultative, and always presents two or three choices, outlines the pros and cons of each and leaves it up to me to make a decision. Lastly, he backs up his recommendations with research. He always wants to ensure I understand the differences between different medications and how he’s seen them work for other patients. I like to understand and learn, so I appreciate that he takes the time to do this. ”

Getting to know Dr. Joshua Cohen

I am a UCSF trained board-certified psychiatrist and neuroscientist with a dual background in clinical care and research. It is my mission to provide personalized, evidence-based psychiatric care that empowers individuals to navigate mental health challenges with clarity, support, and respect. Before starting my private practice, I served on the faculty at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where I trained in psychiatry and served as Chief Resident for Research. During my time at UCSF, I provided care in specialized clinics for depression and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and conducted clinical trials focused on novel neuromodulation therapies. Conducting research has shaped my belief that the best psychiatric care integrates cutting-edge science with deeply personalized attention to each person’s unique experience.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I view psychiatric care as a partnership. Your values, goals, and lived experiences shape the direction we take together. I take time to explain treatment options, listen closely to what’s working and what’s not, and adapt our plan as we go. Whether that includes medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, or exploring next-step treatments, my goal is to help you move forward with clarity and support. I specialize in treatment-resistant depression, bipolar disorder, and other mood disorders, especially when symptoms don’t respond to standard treatments or don’t fit neatly into a diagnostic box. If you’re looking for a thoughtful, science-informed approach to mental health, I’d be honored to work with you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first appointment will be a 60 minute intake where we will complete a comprehensive psychiatric assessment. Follow-up appointments are 30 minutes.

Cruel and financially motivated service, fully opposite of what a psychiatric service should be specially treating vulnerable patients in critical stages. Would not recommend at all.
I am fortunate and very glad to have found Dr. Cohen. He listened to my story and my concerns; asked important questions; and he was helpful, honest, and sympathetic. I look forward to working with him throughout my ongoing treatment.
The Options MD platform was super easy to use and Dr. Cohen is an amazing psychiatrist. Everything has been really smooth, their office is easy to communicate with and helped me through the whole process.
I really appreciate that Dr. Cohen took the time to listen. He walked me through different treatment options and we came up with a plan that is working for me.
I was nervous about my first appointment, but Dr. Cohen made me feel comfortable. I'm really looking forward to continuing to work with him and make progress towards my goals!
Amazing psychiatrist! Dr. Cohen has really helped me with my depression and anxiety. He is very knowledgable, patient and kind. He had gone above and beyond to make sure I received the right treatment and was taken care of. I am so lucky to have found him!
The best thing about Dr. Cohen is that he is willing to actually discuss the pros AND cons of a treatment plan. Never felt like he was trying to steer me toward any specific treatment, either.
What a gem! Dr. Cohen is extremely knowledgeable. I have been through multiple psychiatrists and so many medications to treat my depression, and nothing has seemed to work. I feel like I finally found the expert! I really trust Dr. Cohen.
Dr. Cohen and Options MD have been a life saver. I had given up hope of finding a treatment that worked. Dr. Cohen recommended a med no one else had prescribed and got me into a TMS clinic and it is working. Also, Kristen who answers the phones is the nicest!
