Getting to know Dr. Joshua Stieber

Reaching out for help can be hard, and by making it this far, you are already well on your way. If you are feeling lost, stuck, or incomplete, therapy can help you find growth and purpose. I hold a PhD in Clinical Psychology from St. John's University, and I strive to stand by you as we investigate obstacles to your goals and find ways to resolve whatever is holding you back. Through this process, you can discover greater compassion for yourself and a deeper sense of wholeness.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In addition to my private practice, I work at a clinic that serves 9/11 rescue and recovery workers. I am grateful for what these responders have taught me as they confront their trauma. My experience there helps to inform all of my work in supporting anyone who is engaged in the process of therapy. We will start with me learning more about your goals and background. This will help us see what strengths you have leaned on to make it this far. While celebrating these strengths, we will also see where it is hard to tap into other parts of yourself. We will bring compassion and understanding to these less known parts. In doing so, you will likely find a deep inner wisdom to that provide the answers that you have been seeking. Throughout this process, I strive to bring curiosity, warmth, creativity, insight, and humility. For you, the more you bring a curiosity about yourself, the more meaningful our work can be.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first few sessions will focus on getting to know each other as I learn about your goals and the history that you carry with you. We will talk about the path we will take to help you reach your goals. We will meet at least once weekly, sometimes twice weekly is advised. But details like this can be determined when we discuss your goals. Through the process described in the previous question, we can tap into a variety of techniques to help you more deeply access your emotions--as I believe emotions carry important information as we seek to learn about ourselves. If you are in agreement, we can use breathing exercises and pay attention to how your body feels as a way to increase self-awareness. Ultimately, my goal is to support you in more deeply getting to know yourself as I believe that the mostly enduring results come from answers found within ourselves.
