What should a new client know about working with you?

Dr. Joy James practices at Talkiatry, a patient-centered, online psychiatry practice. Talkiatry providers specialize in medication management and treat a wide range of mental health conditions. They take a personalized approach to care, ensuring that treatment is rooted in a strong patient-provider relationship and a responsible, evidence-based approach to prescribing. We know that every mental health journey is unique, and we’re here to make yours feel manageable and supported at every step.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We start with a comprehensive first visit, where you and your provider will discuss your goals, medical history, and what brings you to treatment. From there, you’ll work with your provider to create a care plan that feels right for you, which may include medication, therapy, or both. If your provider recommends medication, they’ll walk you through your options—our goal is always to help you make informed choices about your care. You’ll meet with your provider regularly for follow-up visits to check in, adjust your care as needed, and make sure you feel supported in your journey.

Because we accept insurance, we can reduce out-of-pocket expenses and still offer high-quality care. You may not have any cost related to your visit with us, depending upon your insurance plan. Most patients pay a small copay per visit, subject to any deductible or coinsurance that your health plan has. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services determines appropriate billing guidelines. These guidelines depend on the length of the visit and the complexity and severity of your diagnosis. For this reason, we need to wait until after the visit for the final determination. We then submit the claim to your insurance company. The charges are calculated based upon pre-negotiated prices with your insurance company. Your insurance company will then determine what amount, if any, is your responsibility per your insurance plan.

Dr. James has poor bedside manner. I’ve never had an experience like this with any health professional. She was visibly irritated and annoyed with responses or questions. She lacked empathy and patience. She did not create a safe space, especially while issuing a mental health diagnosis. She’s quick to prescribe medication without going through details about how the medication works as well as what the side effects are.
