Getting to know Juan Mateo

Hello, my name is Juan Mateo. I am a Bilingual (English/Spanish) Board-Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. I have more than 10 years of medical experience both in medical and psychiatric settings. I have treated a host of psychiatric disorders including Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar, Schizophrenia, Personality disorders, and other psychological ailments. I know that life can be unfair, erratic, and unpredictable. Together as a team we can navigate these personal obstacles and volatilities, by enriching your ego, relationship, and career through multiple modalities. As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I utilize my experience and education in psychopharmacology, and psychotherapy to bring a fully integrated approach to enhance your daily experiences. My techniques incorporate listening, emotion labeling, and Identification of behavioral patterns as a way of making you the agent of change in your life. When individuals become curious of how those around you see the world. Not only, through the eyes, but the feelings, thoughts, and beliefs of the other person. This curiosity and genuine dedication towards learning more about others, facilitates improvements in mood, self-esteem, relationships, and behavioral control. Which will be a major goal in our work.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I enjoy being outdoors, staying active, and grew up playing sports. I take an empathic approach to being with others. I also like to use humor as a way to connect with others and shift the mood when needed. I'm naturally inquisitive and deeply passionate about learning—both about people and the world around me.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach is rooted in curiosity and collaboration. We begin by exploring the areas you're struggling with and looking at a variety of options that have been effective in the past—both medication-based and non-pharmacological strategies, such as exercise, time outdoors, or strengthening social connections. The goal is to gather as much information as possible to create a treatment plan that not only resonates with you but also puts you in control of your care. I believe treatment works best when it's tailored to your values and led by your goals.

Juan has been an incredibly supportive psychiatric nurse practitioner. What stood out to me most is how approachable and understanding he is, which made it much easier to talk openly. He doesn’t just focus on symptoms, but really takes the time to understand what’s going on overall. Juan explains things in a clear, honest way and makes sure you feel comfortable with the plan moving forward. I felt respected, cared for, and never rushed during appointments. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for thoughtful and dependable mental health care.

Approximately five years ago, I was referred to Juan Mateo following a mental health crisis that left me unemployed and uncertain about my future. One of my greatest concerns when starting with a new psychiatrist was the fear of being judged. From the very beginning, Juan demonstrated the opposite. He creates a space where I feel heard, respected, and never criticized. What I appreciate most is his approach. He consistently invites feedback, asks how he can support my goals, and encourages me to explore new perspectives—not in a forceful way, but in a way that empowers me to take ownership of my progress. His guidance helped me rebuild confidence and see possibilities again. Today, I am thriving in a career I love and was promoted within a year. I know I put in the work, but having his support, encouragement, and a safe, neutral space to discuss both my successes and setbacks has been invaluable. I am truly grateful for the impact he has had on my life.
