“Jung Hwan Hyun was extremely punctual and flexible with scheduling our appointment. As a woman who struggles with anxiety and often feels nervous meeting new people, I deeply appreciated how safe and comfortable he made me feel, allowing me to open up. He also helped me receive a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), which I had not previously recognized. Having a name for my symptoms and behaviors has been life-changing and empowering. During our sessions, he worked with me to develop a personalized plan and taught me effective calming techniques for moments of crisis, which have already been very helpful. He is truly an outstanding professional, and I highly recommend him especially to individuals who may not have had positive experiences with providers in the past. As a fellow minority, I felt an additional level of understanding and connection. I would rate him 10/10.”

Getting to know Jung Hwan Hyun

Mr. Jung Hwan Hyun is an adult psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioner who offers virtual consultations through Smile Squared Psychiatry. He is fluent in English and Korean, enabling him to serve individuals from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Mr. Hyun earned his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University, followed by a master's degree in nursing from DePaul University. He further advanced his expertise by obtaining a post-master's certificate in psychiatric and mental health nursing from Wilkes University. While he recognizes that conventional medicine addresses immediate symptoms and discomfort, Mr. Hyun embraces a holistic and integrative approach, emphasizing the importance of stepping back to identify the underlying root causes of dysfunction. He is also passionate about alternative and emerging treatment modalities, including TMS, ketamine, and psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.

What should a new client know about working with you?

It's believed that more than 30-50 percent of individuals with mental health issues do not seek treatment or help. Congratulations, you have already taken a step in the right direction. Just like how a fractured bone causes discomfort and pain, poor mental health also causes day to day discomfort and malfunction. Continuing my analogy, one would expect to take medicine and use a cast to recover from such an injury. I will work with you to understand the situation that you are in and together we will come up with a safe and effective plan. My goal is to get you back up on your feet again without having to feel burdened by your mental health.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session may feel more like an interview because we are getting to know each other and trying to figure out your current/past situation. However, the more we get to know each other we will be able to really focus on your needs and priorities. There is no right or wrong in mental health. Well being can be achieved in many different ways, it is my job to help you achieve that safely and efficiently.

After I ran out of the medication I was prescribed at my first appointment, I sent two prescription refill requests, both on my own and through my pharmacy, and received no answer. I never received my refills. I booked a second appointment in order to discuss my prescriptions. I never received a Zoom link for this appointment. I called the office before the appointment began and received no answer, then called again a few minutes after my appointment was supposed to begin and still received no answer. I emailed the provider to ask where he was and he responded by saying there were additional forms I had not filled out, and ignored the fact that he had never sent a link for our appointment. I replied asking him if he would just refill my prescriptions, per the pharmacy and my personal request, and received no answer. If your medication is time sensitive, I would recommend against booking with this caregiver.

I honestly thought I was never going to find someone who really took their time to understand me. I’m so glad I didn’t give up and found such a genuine provider.

Was a great listener, clear, concise, and was able to help me right away. So grateful, particularly after I had prior first-time appointments with three other psychs who were not helpful and not a right fit for me. Looking forward to continuing my journey with Jung Hwan (Jay) Hyun.

He was making trouble with listening to my needs without judging and trying to get a whole stick approach before prescribing the medication

Great NP, really took the time to listen to me and appreciated all of my concerns. First time I felt that I’ve truly been heard in a psychiatry appt. NP knows his medications and side effects

Doctor Jay was just a great experience. He's attentive - such a great listener and he gives back such unfiltered yet judgement-free replies. I always feel so comfortable speaking to him and I really appreciate how enthusiastically he celebrates my wins and improvements. He remembers small things I may have mentioned previously and it's overall a great experience. I was hesitant to start seeing someone in psych but he's made me feel no shame for any thoughts. And as a fellow child of immigrant, he understands my little stresses that often get overlooked by others. I actually really appreciate that he doesn't make me feel like it's 'a norm' and I should suck it up, but rather he listens and gives me avenues to help me with my emotions and situation.
