Getting to know Dr. Karelis Sierra Cintron

Dr. Sierra-Cintron is board-certified in adult psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has been in practice for 12 years. She currently practices at Talkiatry. Dr. Sierra-Cintron received her medical degree from the Universidad Central del Caribe located in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Upon graduation, she relocated to Philadelphia, where she started her residency program at Einstein Medical Center. After completing her training, she worked for 8 years in a community mental health clinic, treating an underserved population in all modalities of psychiatric care. In her 12-year career, Dr. Sierra-Cintron has treated both adult males and females, including seniors. This has led to varied and wide-ranging diagnoses during the length of her career. After leaving the community clinic setting, she started working for an outpatient clinic in a suburb of Philadelphia. Dr. Sierra-Cintron focuses her practice on medication management. She also engages in supportive therapy in a comprehensive way, focusing on the patient as a whole and not just the symptoms. Dr. Sierra-Cintron has a broad understanding of vitamin support as an adjunctive treatment to traditional medication. She has broadened her understanding of second-line treatment, having been certified in Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), conducting clinics in Clozapine and Long-Acting Antipsychotics (LOA), and even conducting assessments for patients interested in weight loss surgery. Dr. Sierra-Cintron has a comprehensive approach to treatment, and might consider the addition of therapy, either by referral or collaborating with an existing therapist for a more rounded approach and improved outcome. Dr. Sierra-Cintron’s current areas of focus are adults with mood disorders, anxiety, co-occurring substance use disorders, as well as patients with varied concomitant medical problems.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Dr. Karelis Sierra Cintron practices at Talkiatry, a patient-centered, online psychiatry practice. Talkiatry providers specialize in medication management and treat a wide range of mental health conditions. They take a personalized approach to care, ensuring that treatment is rooted in a strong patient-provider relationship and a responsible, evidence-based approach to prescribing. We know that every mental health journey is unique, and we’re here to make yours feel manageable and supported at every step.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We start with a comprehensive first visit, where you and your provider will discuss your goals, medical history, and what brings you to treatment. From there, you’ll work with your provider to create a care plan that feels right for you, which may include medication, therapy, or both. If your provider recommends medication, they’ll walk you through your options—our goal is always to help you make informed choices about your care. You’ll meet with your provider regularly for follow-up visits to check in, adjust your care as needed, and make sure you feel supported in your journey.

Because we accept insurance, we can reduce out-of-pocket expenses and still offer high-quality care. You may not have any cost related to your visit with us, depending upon your insurance plan. Most patients pay a small copay per visit, subject to any deductible or coinsurance that your health plan has. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services determines appropriate billing guidelines. These guidelines depend on the length of the visit and the complexity and severity of your diagnosis. For this reason, we need to wait until after the visit for the final determination. We then submit the claim to your insurance company. The charges are calculated based upon pre-negotiated prices with your insurance company. Your insurance company will then determine what amount, if any, is your responsibility per your insurance plan.

Awesome highly recommend doctors always listens and cares for concerns
great listener, very caring. would recommend to anyone.
Spent 25 minutes filling out paperwork, then sat in the video waiting room, only to realize my appointment had been canceled, 20 minutes in, via text, while I sat there with a "provider will see you shortly" screen. Felt like an idiot for structuring my day around an appointment that couldn't happen... especially as a mental health provider, when someone is coming to see you because they are not "ok," this seems like particularly poor form.

this dr. was very rude, incompassinate, noncaring, and not helpful. I told her I did not want to talk about my accident but she asked me to talk about it anyway thus, upsetting me. when I was crying she placed her hand on her face and elbow on her desk. I told her I had trouble working in Florida which brought me to Pennsylvania. very snide she asked me how I was working now. like she was catching a child in a lie. when the session ended she did not say a word just disconnected the call. I will not recommend anyone for her. maybe for this company. I felt worse when it ended and subsequently had to leave work in order to calm down.

Our initial went great. The dr was very attentive and communicated the game plan effectively. When I scheduled again, there seemed to be some confusion with the appointment as I waited with no word as to where the dr was. I then, 20 min into my supposed appointment, received a call from the dr noting that she was experiencing tech difficulties and we need to reschedule. I rescheduled for the next day, logged in 15 min prior to the appointment and waited until around 10 min after the start time of the visit. No dr, or no communication whatsoever. I contacted the office and it seemed they were even confused as to what was happening and about 18 min in I was finally able to connect with the dr. She basically tried to say I wasn’t there on time and I was the one with the tech issues, but I specifically noted I was on and waiting well before the appointment even began. She then started to try to begin the session with only 10 min left, trying to charge me full price for the appt.
