Getting to know Karen Albert

If you’re feeling anxious, low, overwhelmed by stress, or unsure what’s next, you deserve care that treats you as a whole person—not just a diagnosis or a list of symptoms. I’m here to offer support that’s thoughtful, collaborative, and grounded in respect for your experience. I’m a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and I work with adults who are navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, bipolar disorder, and other mental health challenges. Whether you’re exploring medication for the first time or looking for a provider who truly listens, I’ll meet you with compassion and care. My approach is centered on partnership. I take time to understand what you’re going through, answer your questions, and walk you through your options without pressure. You’ll always have a say in your treatment, and we’ll move at a pace that feels right to you. I also believe in the value of integrative care. That means we might explore sleep, stress, daily routines, or how your thoughts and emotions are connected. I often incorporate cognitive behavioral and mindfulness-based strategies into our sessions, and I encourage therapy alongside medication whenever possible. If you’re working with a therapist, I’ll coordinate care to make sure your team is aligned—or I can help connect you with someone on our staff. You can expect each session to be a calm, nonjudgmental space where your voice matters. My role is to support you in making informed, confident decisions about your mental health. If you’re ready for care that respects your story and centers your well-being, I’m here to help.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You’ll be met with care, patience, and a genuine desire to understand what you're going through. I don’t rush appointments or make assumptions—I take time to really listen, explain your options clearly, and answer your questions honestly. You’ll always have a say in your treatment, and I’ll support you in making decisions that feel right for you. If you’ve had mental health care in the past that felt impersonal, rushed, or dismissive, I want this to feel different. My goal is to create a space where you feel safe being yourself and where your experiences are met with empathy and respect. You’re not expected to have it all figured out. Whether you’re just starting to explore medication, feeling uncertain about what you need, or looking for someone who values your input, I’ll meet you where you are. I also know that mental health care can feel overwhelming—especially if you’ve had to advocate for yourself in the past. That’s why I focus on making this process as clear, collaborative, and supportive as possible. I’ll walk you through every step of treatment and always leave room for your questions, preferences, and concerns. Clients often share that they appreciate my calm presence, how I explain things without medical jargon, and how I stay present and engaged throughout each appointment. My goal is for you to leave each session feeling heard, understood, and more confident about your care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work together begins with a 90-minute intake appointment where the focus is entirely on you—your experiences, your concerns, and what you're hoping to get out of treatment. I’ll ask questions to better understand your mental health history, current symptoms, physical health, lifestyle, and any past treatments or medications you’ve tried. This conversation also gives you space to ask questions, share anything that feels important, and get a sense of how I approach care. By the end of our first session, we’ll talk through possible diagnoses and explore treatment options together. If medication seems like a helpful next step, I’ll walk you through the options, what to expect, and how we’ll monitor your progress. You’ll never be pressured into a decision—we’ll move at your pace, and your comfort and understanding are always a priority. Follow-up appointments are typically 15 to 30 minutes and take place every one to three months, depending on your needs. These check-ins give us time to talk about how you're feeling, assess how medications are working (or not), make adjustments as needed, and explore any new challenges or questions that have come up. In addition to medication management, I often incorporate elements of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and motivational interviewing into our sessions. That might look like helping you identify patterns in your thoughts or behaviors, exploring ways to manage stress, or building awareness of how emotions show up in your body. I don’t offer full-length talk therapy, but I believe these tools can enhance your care and help you feel more grounded day to day. If you're also working with a therapist, I’ll gladly coordinate care to make sure your treatment feels connected and supportive. And if you’re looking for a therapist, I can help connect you with someone on our team. My goal is to offer care that feels collaborative, thoughtful, and aligned with your goals.
