“For years I was very reluctant to seek mental health care, and was determined to 'think' my way out of any life issues I faced; until I faced an issue I wasn't able to overcome. Dr. Unger not only showed an incredible amount of patience with me, she was able to combine her high level of professional skill with the genuineness of her personality to help me understand things I never previously considered. I always look forward to speaking with Dr. Unger, and have referred several close friends to her who are also reluctant to take the initial step towards better mental health. Her work with me has been life-changing; without question.”

“I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Unger. When I first started therapy, I was depressed, alone, confused, and unsure of what to do in life. Through therapy, I was able to understand myself better, learn to accept the things I couldn’t change, let go of the past, and move forward. The growth I’ve experienced has truly been life-changing. I can genuinely say I am now thriving and feeling confident about the life I’m building. I’m incredibly grateful for the guidance, support, and perspective from Dr. Unger. If you’re struggling or feeling stuck, I highly recommend her.”

What should a new client know about working with you?

I primarily use a interpersonal style with patient directed therapy, as a analytically informed psychotherapist for the last 27 years, I have seen many lives changed when patients and therapists work together. However, on occasion patients may need medication support for Anxiety and Depression and I can also provide those interventions, if required.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I offer psychotherapy but also I offer psychoanalytic therapy with the use of the analytic couch, when a patient wants deeper analytic work, character change, being seen multiple times a week. I also offer equine therapy for appropriate clients. I have private waiting rooms, and a private exit. Having worked extensively with law enforcement and government security agencies, maintaining strict confidentiality is always guaranteed.

Since starting therapy, I feel like I’ve learned a lot about myself. I’ve become more aware of my thoughts, emotions, and some of the patterns in my behavior and relationships. You’ve given me a place where I can talk openly and work through things instead of keeping everything inside. I also appreciate that you challenge me to look at things differently rather than simply agreeing with me. You’re always a phone call/text away and I appreciate that as well. There are still things I want to work on, especially managing my emotions, understanding my thought patterns, building healthier relationships and reactions, and becoming more confident in myself. Overall, you’ve been helpful, and I want to continue working on my progress.
Dr. Unger is by far the best Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. She was available quite quickly for an appointment. She listens and thoughtfully responds using her professional experience. She was able to help me see the points of my challenge needing change and assisted me in the process. Her office is located on a quiet corner of old Valrico.
What impressed me most was Dr. Unger’s exceptional clinical empathy; she listened to me with absolute sincerity and undivided attention. Her approach was entirely free of condescension, creating a deeply respectful and reassuring clinical environment.
