Getting to know Dr. Kateri Berasi

Hi! I’m a licensed clinical psychologist who helps people navigate anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, and major life transitions. My style is collaborative and trauma-informed, blending talk therapy with creative and somatic approaches when helpful. I specialize in supporting creatives and those who feel outside the mainstream. I provide therapy to adults, I supervise clinicians in training, and I’m also the founder and director of Transcendent Self Therapy, based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I received my Masters in Mental Health Counseling from Columbia University, my Doctorate in Psychology from Long Island University, and my Postdoctoral degree from Columbia University. All of my education and clinical training has been at sites accredited by the American Psychological Association and I am affiliated with Mount Sinai Health Partners, a clinically integrated network within the Mount Sinai Health System. While the majority of my work is focused on providing therapy to patients, I also like to engage in the latest research in the field to make sure I'm staying current and offering the best care possible. I've written book chapters in the following publications: Emerging Adults in Therapy: How to Strengthen Your Clinical Competency, LGBTI Asylum Seekers and Refugees from a Legal and Political Perspective Persecution, Asylum and Integration, and A Handbook for the Study of Mental Health: Social Contexts, Theories, and Systems 2nd Edition.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to psychotherapy is person-centered, humanistic, and trauma-informed. I am trained in a range of therapy modalities that I weave together to best suit your needs. Psychodynamic theory greatly informs my thinking, and I also pull from Internal Family Systems parts work. I may integrate mindfulness exercises as well as movement in our work together. To help me better understand you, I encourage you to invite me into your inner world via the use of dreams, art, writing, music, or other means of metaphor. Therapy is challenging. We will be exploring topics or events you may have buried long ago. We will be processing difficult emotions. When therapy works well, when you are working with the right therapist for you and are open to yourself, it can be deeply rewarding and life-changing. It can open you up to new possibilities and heal past trauma. Therapy is relational. It is my job to witness you and guide you through your process of change. I treat this responsibility with the utmost respect and care, as it is your life, and what could be more important than that?!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We will work together to gain clarity on your personal goals and values. In helping you acquire more perspective, you will be better equipped to make choices that are in alignment with how you want to live your life. We will identify means through which you have historically coped with difficulty, and create new methods that bring you more ease and happiness. Sometimes sessions will feel lighter, sometimes heavier. There’s room for your laughter, tears, anger, shame, excitement, fears. We don’t set an agenda but go by your lead of what is on your mind and of importance to you in the moment. We will talk about the past, present, and future as any of it organically surfaces, and we will help you make important connections about yourself to help you grow and evolve. By making you feel safe and seen, you will find healing and change more easily.

I worked with Dr. Kateri Baresi in both individual and group settings. While working with Dr. Baresi, I navigated many difficult obstacles and personal challenges, allowing for more ease, growth, and connection in my life. The care for clients is high, and I felt that my experiences and feelings were honored and understood throughout our time together. I recommend Dr. Baresi for anyone considering therapy!
My partner & I loved working with Dr. Berasi. She truly created a space of safety & comfort for us, while still providing critique & structure where needed. She guided us through difficult emotional work with grace, tact, & invaluable insight. I have seen many therapists, and consider it one of the most important skills to be able to meet your clients exactly where they need you in terms of conversation, support, and even humor - Dr. Berasi is outstanding at this. Only stopped seeing her because we moved across the country, and we will miss working with her greatly.
I highly recommend Kateri to anyone looking for a new therapist. Kateri is warm, grounded, compassionate, and affirming. She is approachable and an attentive listener. I felt connected to her immediately and wouldn't hesitate to work with her again.
