She earned her Bachelor's degree in Biology in 1987 from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1991 from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Dr. Empen completed her residency at Wright State University. Before joining WellStar, she practiced with East Cobb Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, P.C. in Marietta.
