Hey! I'm Katie, a Registered Dietitian in Irvine, California. Here's my story. I was a small child. So small that loved ones gave me the nickname "stick". This, along with the diet culture shown to me in magazines and media taught me to admire thinness. It taught me that thinness was what made someone worthy, and it's what made me feel valuable. This thing that made me feel valued as a child led to some unhealthy teenage years when I began swimming competitively and gaining fat and muscle. I was growing up and filling out, but my mind told me I was in the wrong. I thought I wasn't supposed to gain weight. I was supposed to be the "stick" that my family adored so much. This feeling of guilt for allowing my body to grow led to a constant internal struggle. I felt the need to lose weight and followed any and every regimen found in a magazine to do so, even if it meant doing 100 sit-ups before bed each night. Because of these regimens, however, my swimming ability was suffering. My body wanted and needed more fuel, but I wouldn't give in. These disordered thoughts plagued my late teens and early twenties. It wasn't until I began training for triathlons that I thought there had to be a better way. So I spent my free time researching nutrition, falling in love with the idea of fueling my body well while maintaining a body size that allowed me to do all of the things I enjoyed. This led me to one of the longest journies of my life - going back to school to become a Registered Dietitian. After three years of schooling at Iowa State University, an internship at Duke, and an additional year of experience in clinical nutrition, I'm ready to help you find peace with nutrition just as I did. Nutrition is hard, but you don't have to figure it out on your own. With my expertise regarding nutrition and your expertise regarding your body and lifestyle, we'll work as partners to find nutrition solutions that are perfect for you!
