Getting to know Dr. Katlyn Bowman

As a committed mental health provider, achieving balance in both my personal and professional life has been a priority. I am happily married with two young children and two beloved large dogs. Our family enjoys engaging in various activities such as crafting, hiking, fishing, dancing and playing music, participating in sports, reading, and continuous learning. With over 13 years of experience in mental health care, I have worked across diverse settings, ranging from inpatient hospitals to outpatient clinics. My background as a nurse encompasses various roles within the hospital system, including the emergency department, renal/surgical units, and surgery. Mental health care has been a consistent passion throughout my nursing career, leading me to pursue a Doctorate of Nursing with a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certification from the top school in the country.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In my role as a provider, I am dedicated to meeting my clients wherever they are in their life journey. I believe in fostering a collaborative approach, working closely with clients to develop personalized treatment plans or medication strategies that align with their unique needs. Active client participation is paramount in my practice, and I actively encourage questions, provide educational support, and welcome new ideas to ensure a comprehensive and client-centered approach to care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our initial medication management session is dedicated to building a comprehensive understanding of you. Prior to this appointment, we request that you complete forms detailing your medical history, medication history, and psychosocial background. This groundwork enables us to center our attention on your unique life story and treatment objectives. During this session, we collaborate on the development of a diagnosis, exploring the criteria for specific diagnoses, discussing best practices for treatment, and formulating a follow-up plan. This involves in-depth learning about your diagnosis, medication insights, potential lifestyle modifications, and a substantial focus on education. Subsequent follow-up sessions involve assessing the effectiveness of medications, monitoring for side effects, and utilizing symptom checklists. Depending on your treatment plan, we may integrate supportive therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), or solution-based therapy. For clients whose primary focus is on therapy, our initial session mirrors the medication management appointment but without the primary emphasis on medications. While we may briefly discuss your current medications, our primary focus lies in delving into diagnoses, managing symptoms, developing treatment plans, and exploring potential lifestyle modifications. Follow-up therapy sessions typically commence with a week update, revisiting any assigned "homework," and delving into the processing of emotions. We then concentrate on refining strategies for change, creating a dynamic and supportive environment for your therapeutic journey.

She seems very kind and discussed side effects for medication that I know most other providers would hesitate to mention. There was no shame in anything we discussed.
