Kelly Larson, LMFT

Kelly Larson, LMFT

Marriage and Family Therapist
MN
I have been working in the mental health field for the last 18 years. I hold a Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy from Argosy University and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin, Stout. My approach is to be as real with my clients as they are with me. I want to give practical and tangible skills every session, so clients have something to take away at each meeting. Knowledge is only as good as it is practiced in your daily life. I will use your language to make goals that relate directly to your life. Mistakes are small blessings that help us create new patterns. I do not believe in shaming anyone for any mistake, and I encourage clients to talk about the things they never do. I will be real with all clients and acknowledge that I've also made mistakes. I won't always know the perfect answer, but I know my clients will. Sometimes people just need someone to listen to their journey. Take a chance and take the first step-if not today, when?

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have a laid back personality, use humor in most all my work and will honor your autonomy. I do not have one "cookie cutter" approach to my practice, rather I get to know you first and see what might be most helpful.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

As a therapist, I have had my own experinces with professionals that simply did not work. While there are certain questions and papework to start therapy, I do not like to use "therapy jargon" or talk down to anyone. You will schedule an intake that will give me a good overview of the type of symptoms you experience daily that you want to change. I do not prescribe medication, but can assist in a referral and educate clients about talk therapy and med management. If you like to write, and/or get small homework assignments to process durings session, I have resources, although I will not expect this. At this time I am only working through telehealth and only accepting adult clients. I work with both adult individuals and couples. When I started my private practice, I wanted to take way the stigma of mental health, including a diagnose to receive therapy. This is why I do not work with insurance agencies, as often this is a requirement. I am educated to diagnose, but do not think a label is required to see a therapist. If a client wants to inquire about a diagnosis, I will be more than happy to educate and explore. I am a cash only service by choice, as most insurance companies require either a deductible, copay or co-insurance. I have made it affordable to all by not accepting insurance and avoiding any network requirements. Telehealth allows anyone in the state of MN to get immediate assistance, regardless of rural or urban demographics and without a wait list, as most in office clinics will have.
