Getting to know Dr. Kendall Schellenger

I am a warm licensed psychologist with over 10 years of experience working and training in mental health. I earned my PsyD from Pace University and provide individual therapy to adolescents and adults. Clients have come to me with depression, anxiety, relationship, family, and career struggles, as well as entrenched patterns related to trauma and coping. I have worked with people overcoming emotional, physical, and sexual abuse and neglect, as well as those navigating major life transitions at home, school or work, and in relationships. If you are feeling a sense of emptiness, aimlessness, or stagnation; struggling with self-esteem or identity issues; or feel inhibited in your capacity to express yourself and assert your needs in this world, I am here to reach out to.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I practice from a psychodynamic perspective into which I integrate relational, attachment-based, emotion-focused, strength-based, cognitive-behavioral, and dialectical-behavioral therapy practices, depending on your unique needs as we come to understand them. My work takes into account the extensive nature of psychological struggles within the rich and complex contexts of our relationships and experiences, including social, political and cultural influences. In my practice, I believe in creating a safe, warm, and flexible therapeutic environment, where all can be welcomed. I am dedicated to being increasingly anti-racist, LGBTQIA+-affirming, and mindful of the struggles many of us face against oppressive social practices. I am personally dedicated to cultural humility, openness and responsibility. I obtained my PsyD from Pace University and have experience working in a range of settings including hospitals, schools, and community mental health clinics. I bring all of these experiences to bear in the private practice setting.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our sessions will vary depending on the needs you are bringing in on any particular day. I am interested in what is most pressing and most compelling to you on any given day or week. Sometimes you may have a specific area requiring immediate and more active attention, and other times, we may be able to explore long standing issues that have gotten in your way of success and fulfillment. Our work will be deeply collaborative and I will rely on your input to fashion how we might best use our time. A major part of our work will be my openness and standing invitation to receive feedback from you as to how we can better tailor your therapy to your particular needs and the issues that most trouble you. Our sessions may include exploration, understanding and making meaning of your distress, support ,compassion and guidance through difficult challenges, problem solving and solution oriented strategies, skills building and training, as well as creating opportunities for healing and growth within our relationship or out in the world. Every therapy is different, as is every session. I invite you to set up a time with me, so we can embark on a challenging, growthful and liberating therapeutic journey.
