“I’ve been going through my mental health journey for a few years now and have met so many mental health professionals, but Kevin has got to be one of the most attentive of them all. He provided the perfect balance of making me feel seen/understood while also providing helpful tips on how to manage my daily challenges, which I’ve already been implementing. It can be hard to feel connected to people in this field, but Kevin was so thoughtful in his approach it makes me feel confident to continue working with him! ”

Getting to know Kevin Lu

As a psychiatric nurse practitioner with a Master's in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from Walden University, my practice is guided by a steadfast commitment to compassion, empathy, and a reservoir of knowledge in mental health. Recognizing the profound impact that mental health has on overall well-being, I approach my work with a dedication to providing empathetic care that acknowledges the unique experiences and challenges faced by each individual. My goal is to create a therapeutic alliance based on trust and respect, fostering an environment where patients feel heard and understood, laying the foundation for collaborative and effective treatment.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I firmly believe in fostering a collaborative and patient-centered approach to care. I see each patient as the expert in their own experiences, and my role is to serve as a facilitator, empowering them to be the driver in the decision-making process. By actively involving patients in their care plans, I aim to create a partnership where their unique perspectives, values, and preferences shape the direction of their mental health journey. This collaborative model not only promotes a sense of autonomy and self-determination but also enhances the therapeutic relationship. I strive to create an environment where open communication is encouraged, enabling patients to express their concerns, aspirations, and goals. By actively listening and valuing their input, I work to co-create treatment plans that align with their individual needs and aspirations, ultimately fostering a more effective and personalized approach to mental health care. Through active listening, open communication, and a genuine concern for the well-being of my patients, I aim to empower individuals to navigate their mental health journey with resilience and optimism, promoting a path to lasting recovery and improved quality of life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Incorporating the recovery model into my practice involves actively engaging patients in shared decision-making. I place a strong emphasis on understanding their personal experiences, values, and preferences. By fostering open communication and creating a non-judgmental space, I encourage patients to take an active role in setting their own recovery objectives. Together, we develop individualized treatment plans that consider their strengths, resources, and the various dimensions of their lives. I view setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning within the recovery process. I promote resilience and self-efficacy, emphasizing that setbacks do not define the entirety of their journey. Through this collaborative and recovery-oriented approach, I aim to inspire hope, instill confidence, and empower patients to lead fulfilling lives, recognizing and building upon their inherent strengths and capacities.
