Dr. Khushbu Shah, MD

Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
200 Middlesex Tpke, Ste 306B, Iselin, NJ
?Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.? - Buddha. Before becoming a Psychiatrist, I volunteered in a teaching institute as a researcher, worked as a tutor for school and college students, and was involved in a first-aid squad as a fundraiser. All these roles gave me deep satisfaction because I was making a difference in people's lives. I wondered about the true impact of my work. These different roles were all related to human connection, so I took the leap into earning an MD in Psychiatry from New York Headquarters American University of Antigua. There was no turning back! I completed my Residency in Psychiatry at Richmond University Medical Center and a Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. Three words that describe my style are: authenticity, levity, and balance. My greatest goal is to help others develop into healthy and whole individuals and to embrace life's journey. I strive to help others actualize the value of their individual being and inspire them to experience their maximum potential. I've worked with people of all ages and backgrounds and have extensive experience treating depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorders.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Dr. Shah believes in an integrative, holistic approach to mental health. Her approach is “the East meets the West” type. It focuses on nutrition, exercise, lifestyle, sleep, mindfulness, stress reduction, coping skills, and social connections in promoting mental health. She has completed an integrative psychiatry fellowship and offers integrative and functional psychiatry evaluations in her practice. This approach to psychiatry tries to identify the root cause of the problem that may cause or contribute to psychiatric symptoms. Dr. Shah also offers school evaluations, consultations, second opinions, psychotherapy, and medication management in her practice.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Dr. Shah believes in a thorough evaluation to help make an accurate diagnosis and treat the underlying cause of the problem. Once established as an outpatient, please remember that the process is not a quick fix. It entails changes in diet and nutritional needs, as well as the willingness to have patience to see a bigger change as we progress towards wellness. It may take months to notice improvements. The initial appointment will last approximately 2 hours. Dr. Shah prefers that both parents attend, if possible. The initial consultation will have a one-hour evaluation with your child, followed by an interview with the parent. For young kids, Dr. Shah may use developmentally appropriate toys, games, and art supplies to make your child comfortable with getting additional information as needed. The evaluation will conclude with a reporting conference with parents to discuss findings and recommendations. If testing or medical records are available for review, please provide them prior to the appointment with Dr. Shah via fax or through our encrypted email system. As part of a complete evaluation, Dr. Shah will also review records and collaborate with other professionals that are providing care for your child. If extensive collaboration is required, an additional fee may be incurred. If there is complexity in the case, Dr. Shah may require an additional appointment to make recommendations.
