Nutrition has been an interest of mine since high school, but the more I learn about it, the more I appreciate its impact on many aspects of life. It affects growth and development, current health, mental functioning, emotional state, immunity, disease prevention, and overall quality of life. The primary reason I chose this field is because it centers on caring for people. One of the most rewarding parts of my work is hearing clients share how much better they feel after making positive changes to their eating habits. Everyone has a relationship with food that reveals something about them, so let me tell you about mine. Most people assume that since I'm a dietitian, I eat perfectly. There was a time when I strove for perfection in all areas of life, including my eating. However, I've learned there is no ?perfect? way to eat because there are no good or bad foods, and perfection is an unrealistic standard I no longer hold myself to. There are no rules governing what I should or shouldn't eat at any moment. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' position on the Total Diet Approach explains that all foods can be part of a healthy diet. The key is balance, variety, and moderation. Because I have not always had a healthy relationship with food that models these principles, you can be reassured that you will not receive judgment from me about your eating habits. My relationship with food now is one of mindfulness, freedom, joy, and grace. I earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Nutrition and Health Sciences from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, which deepened my understanding and commitment to this field. Eating should be driven by your body's needs rather than your mind's demands. It should be free from rules and limitations, without obligation or guilt. It should be pleasurable and satisfying both physically and emotionally.
