Getting to know Dr. Kristine Spano

I take a holistic, person-centered, and strengths-based approach toward facilitating psychological growth. I emphasize increasing my patients’ emotional awareness, guiding them to explore their feelings more deeply, and supporting them in understanding how emotions shape their self-perception and relationships with others.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe therapy begins with finding the right fit, and, if possible, I recommend that we meet in person for the first psychotherapy session (i.e., the initial 60-minute evaluation). If you are seeking a neuropsychological evaluation, the initial evaluation (90-120 minutes) can be completed virtually. Testing itself is primarily completed in the office located in Philadelphia.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We will start with a 60-minute clinical evaluation, during which I will learn about your reasons for seeking therapy, your symptom history, and your personal background, which will help me better understand you. Typically, it takes one to three sessions to gather a complete history. Depending on your issue, I might assign tasks between sessions to help reduce your symptoms. After the initial session, our meetings will be 45 minutes each. Some patients prefer to meet bi-weekly; however, I usually recommend meeting for four consecutive weeks initially to build the therapeutic relationship and ensure continuity at the start. Our sessions will give you a chance to talk about everyday experiences, and I will help you better understand your own thoughts and feelings about these experiences by listening carefully and creating a safe space for you to be yourself. Usually, patients learn to recognize their emotions more clearly and gain insight into the complex feelings behind their symptoms. Since I take a holistic approach to treatment, I may recommend a combination of behavioral strategies, lifestyle changes, and collaboration with your primary care physician. This might include suggestions such as increased physical activity, dietary adjustments, or specific supplements—for example, magnesium glycinate for women—always discussed in coordination with your overall healthcare team. My aim is to support your well-being from multiple angles, recognizing the interconnectedness of physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors.
