Getting to know Dr. Larissa Portnoff

Dr. Portnoff provides therapy to individuals and adults, that include children and adolescents, business professionals, couples, and families who experience interpersonal difficulties, low self-esteem, relationship stress, depression, anxiety, ADHD, mood disorders, eating disorders, and trauma. Her clinical approach includes evidence-based therapies such as CBT, DBT, ACT, and psychodynamic psychotherapy. She believes in cultivating a sense of meaning, purpose, and resilience. Clinically, she provides treatment for a range of presenting problems, but does not currently see patients with moderate to severe alcohol or substance misuse given the necessity for increased medical oversight at the start of mental health treatment. She earned her B.A. in Psychology at the University of Denver (2011), and then M.S. (2017), M.Phil. (2019), and Ph.D. doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at Columbia University (2021). Her previous research has included mood disorders, eating disorders, anxiety, mindfulness, and global mental health. Her previous clinical training has included NYU College Counseling & Wellness Center, New York Presbyterian Weill-Cornell, Department of Veteran Affairs, and the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. Dr. Larissa Portnoff accepts most PPO insurance plans as an out-of-network provider and in-network with select insurance providers. Psychological services are all provided remotely via Telehealth.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe that warmth, authenticity, and compassion are key elements of the therapeutic process. I want clients to feel a sense of safety and trust throughout our work together. I am not a “blank slate” therapist and will interact with you throughout the therapy session. I believe that change happens when you are ready, and I will always support where you are in the therapeutic process. I want you to feel seen, heard, and fully understood even in difficult moments. Together, we will establish weekly goals for psychological symptom management and introduce mind-body strategies for stress reduction. Collaboratively, we will develop an individualized plan. I enjoy developing long-term relationships with my clients and want you to find everything you want to thrive in life!

Dr. Portnoff is wonderful! She made me feel comfortable and heard right away. She does a great job of validating you while also giving you new perspectives. Highly recommend!!
Dr. Portnoff is extremely insightful, and makes you consider things you have not considered before, helping you develop a new approach to life. After meeting with her, she has come up with a plan to deal with my issues and happiness, one step at a time. Additionally, she is very patient and kind. I would highly recommend her to anyone who is looking for help with any issue.
I began seeing Dr. Portnoff while I was going through a separation. Her guidance helped me find stability. She focuses our conversations on the present and the future, emphasizing my growth as an individual who can take good care of themselves. I’ve healed a lot since I started working with her. I’m now able to show up for my family in ways I didn’t think I was capable of before.
After just a few weeks Larissa has already been so helpful - drawing unique insights and connections that other therapists I saw for years didn’t make. Would highly recommend to anyone going through a crisis or just looking to proactively work on themselves.
I was very hesitant to to meet with a psychologist at first because I am a very closed person and it is difficult for me to express myself. But Dr. Portnoff always makes me feel good about opening up and expressing myself. I have learned a lot of important life lessons from her so far and I feel more confident in myself. She really makes you feel like you have a good friend on your side.
Very negative experience. Therapist seems to be very inexperienced and was 5-10 minutes late to each of our appointments. I had to follow up for paperwork needed before our first visit (she does not have a legitimate office). She inputs a high level of personal opinions into sessions, and terminated treatment due to her own misjudgment about a family situation. She has been reported to Office of Professional Medical Misconduct.

Dr. Portnoff has truly changed my life. I was looking for a provider who I could feel comfortable sharing my story with, and she has again and again proven herself to be just that. She is patient, listens to me thoroughly, and brings the utmost level of empathy to my care. She has been an excellent guide through this journey of healing. Finally, she has always been more than accommodating when it comes to scheduling, which has is a huge plus given my work schedule. I am forever thankful.
I would definitely recommend seeing Dr. Portnoff. She acts in a caring, empathetic manner while providing a safe, nonjudgmental space for clients.
Dr. Portnoff is very clear about goals, expectations and methods. Easy to talk to, inclusive and open to different identities and experiences. Highly recommended!
I hadn't sought therapy in 20 years. I was not sure what I wanted or what to expect. I researched a few therapists on ZocDoc and chose Dr. Portnoff to see if we clicked. Dr. Portnoff was able to see me the day I requested an appointment. Our first video meeting was a 15 minute consultation. I immediately felt comfortable speaking with her. We scheduled a full session for later that same week. I've now been working with Dr. Portnoff for over two months. I find her to be an excellent therapist who carefully listens, asks thoughtful questions which enables me explore and understand my actions, emotions and motives, and gives helpful advice and feedback. I am truly lucky to have found a therapist that works so well with me on the first try. I have full confidence that she can help others in a variety of situations given her gift of empathy, intellect and understanding.
Dr. Portnoff has been a joy to work with - she scheduled our initial consult quickly and since then has been professional, warm, and incredibly effective at helping me sort through the topics that I sought therapy for. I highly highly recommend her!
Larissa is an extremely caring and kind person who takes the time to listen to me but also provide practical tools and input on how to approach situations in my life. I am so glad I found her after months of looking for a therapist.
Dr. Portnoff is amazing. She is professional and I feel like I can be completely open with her. I highly recommend Dr. Portnoff and I already feel so much better!
Dr. Portnoff is the fourth therapy provider I have seen since 2016 and I find her to be consistently warm, caring, and conscientious in her work and communication. I started seeing her in early 2023 for a specific reason and not only did she get started right away on helping me with that, but we have also been able to start working through some long term difficulties from my past. She maintains a safe and supportive environment and I feel comfortable talking to her, even about uncomfortable topics. She listens well, is not patronizing or dismissive, and most importantly she actually remembers a lot of the details of our conversations from session to session, something that my previous providers couldn’t always manage to do. I’m very glad to have found her on ZocDoc and definitely plan to keep seeing her!
