“I absolutely adore Lateima. She is patient, understanding, and allows me to vent in the way I need to without ever judging. She has an exceptional memory. I told her about some things I had going on 6 weeks prior and she remembered. The most important thing, is she holds me accountable. She's not the therapist who is going to coddle you when you may be wrong. She offers alternative ways to handle your situation. Overall, she is a great listener. Sometimes, people just want to be heard. Highly recommend her.”

Getting to know Latiema Merilus

Hello, I’m Latiema Merilus, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with over eight years of experience supporting adults through mental health and substance use challenges. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, and co-occurring conditions, with a particular focus on helping individuals who feel overwhelmed, burned out, or stuck in patterns that are hard to break. My path into mental health care is unique. Before becoming a nurse practitioner, I worked in the finance industry, where I saw firsthand how stress, pressure, and untreated mental health concerns can quietly impact every part of a person’s life. That experience shaped how I practice today. I understand what it feels like to function on the outside while struggling internally, and I am deeply committed to helping people find a more sustainable way forward. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing with honors from Rutgers University and my Master of Science in Nursing from Wilkes University. I also hold a certification in addictions nursing, which allows me to support individuals navigating both mental health and substance use concerns with a more integrated and informed approach. My care is rooted in a holistic, real-world perspective. I look beyond symptoms to understand your environment, stressors, habits, and emotional patterns. I combine medication management with therapy-informed care to help you not only feel better, but also understand yourself more clearly and build lasting change. My goal is to help you feel more in control, more grounded, and more like yourself again.

What should a new client know about working with you?

If you’re reaching out for support, there’s a good chance you’ve been carrying a lot on your own. My goal is to create a space where you don’t have to do that anymore. When we work together, you can expect a calm, supportive, and non-judgmental environment where you feel comfortable being honest about what’s really going on. I take time to listen carefully and understand not just your symptoms, but how your mental health is affecting your daily life. I approach care as a partnership. You won’t be talked at or rushed through appointments. Instead, we’ll have open, real conversations about what you’re experiencing and what you want to change. I’ll provide guidance, structure, and options, but your voice and preferences will always be central to the process. My goal is for you to feel understood, supported, and more confident in your ability to move forward.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We start with a comprehensive initial evaluation that feels more like a conversation than a checklist. I take time to understand your symptoms, history, and goals, but also how your day-to-day life looks, what stressors you’re dealing with, and what patterns may be keeping you stuck. From there, we build a personalized treatment plan that fits your life, not just a diagnosis. I often integrate medication management with therapy-informed strategies, especially for individuals dealing with stress, emotional overwhelm, or unhealthy coping patterns. Given my background in addiction care, I also pay close attention to habits and behaviors that may be affecting your mental health, and we work together to create healthier, more sustainable ways of coping. Follow-up sessions are focused on real progress, not just symptom check-ins. We look at how you’re functioning, what’s improving, what still feels difficult, and what adjustments need to be made. I keep the process flexible and collaborative so your care continues to evolve as your needs change. My goal is to help you move beyond short-term relief and develop the insight, stability, and tools needed to maintain your mental health long term.

The provider was polite, professional and very engaged. The session went extremely well and didn't seem like the provider was just reading off a script or rating scale. I was very happy with the initial session and look forward to meeting again
