She describes her hometown as, “the place where I learned the importance of perseverance and not giving up on your dreams.” The perseverance was shaped by a number of challenges early in her life. Her mother underwent open heart surgery when Dr. Latisha was just 11 years old. The experience forever changed her, and her siblings. That, combined with the pain of watching so many of her mother's friends and family die from complications, many from medications designed to treat their illnesses, shaped her perspective on healthcare, and made her determined to be part of a change for the good. “I knew something had to change.
