“After just one appointment I knew this is the provider I want to stick with. I immediately felt at ease—she is a great listener, thorough, and is considerate of your individual needs and concerns. She is very knowledgeable about pharmacology, and she walks you through treatment options she think may work for you personally and why, but she doesn’t put pressure on you to try something you’re not comfortable with. Plus, she is way more familiar with ADHD than any NP/psychiatrist I’ve had in the past. (She gets that ADHD impacts *every* aspect of life, not just focusing at school/work, but also emotional dysregulation and energy levels and self-esteem and sleep, etc.) It’s clear that Laurel stays up-to-date on research and truly hears what her patients are saying.”

Getting to know Laurel Edinburgh

My name is Laurel Edinburgh. I am a board-certified mental health nurse practitioner with a Master's in Nursing from the University of California San Francisco Parnassus Campus and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. I practice pediatric, adolescent, and adult psychiatry, focusing on treating children, teens, and young adults. I specialize in managing ADHD, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. One of my areas of expertise is medication management. I listen carefully and respectfully to my clients, striving to understand their symptoms. I work in collaboration with my patients-and, if appropriate, with their parents-to find medications that support their functioning and recovery. In addition, I provide psychotherapy for parents managing difficult child and teen behaviors that disrupt the family and adversely affect the child's school functioning. I have experience managing challenging situations such as truancy, school refusal, oppositional behaviors, running away, and sibling conflict. I also enjoy working with transgender and gender-non-conforming teens and young adults. I am currently seeing patients through telehealth.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Psychiatric treatment starts with an initial 60 to 90-minute appointment where we focus on why you are starting or continuing psychiatric care. Appointments where the adolescent is the patient typically last 90 minutes, with a portion of the visit allowing confidential care between me and the adolescent. I will ask your concerns and what you have noticed about yourself. What are your strengths and your goals? What do you want from treatment? I will ask questions about your overall health, your background and current life circumstances, your family and friendships, and your use of drugs or other substances. I may also ask you to complete some pen-and-paper symptom scales to provide an additional measure of how you are doing. This process, though intensive, bears fruit down the road as it allows me to have a fuller understanding of who you are and to collaborate with you to find the best treatment possible. ? At the end of this appointment, we will discuss a treatment plan, including the frequency of subsequent visits. This treatment plan may include medication, psychotherapy, or both and will be guided by your preferences and needs. I may also refer you for group or other professional consultations or testing. If you choose to go on medication, we will discuss potential side effects and what you can expect.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

It is helpful if you complete the Patient Registration Form, which is available after you create a Theranest patient portal account. If you have been on medication previously, please bring a list of your current and previous medications, including the doses and length of time you used them. If you have a psychotherapist and would like for me to speak with them before your fist visit, please have them contact me.

In-network insurances

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance
Initial session: $200 for 60 minutes

More information on payments and coverage

While I do not contract with insurance companies, I do assist my patients by providing the paperwork necessary to submit to their insurance carriers for reimbursement. I am considered an “out-of-network” provider for PPO insurance plans. Practicing this way allows me to provide the kind of care I feel is most helpful, without having to spend substantial amounts of time on paperwork. Additionally, it ensures complete patient confidentiality for patients who elect not to notify their insurance carriers or employers of provided care.

My experience was great! I told her my story what I was looking for what I needed she responded with compassion and understanding. We made a solid plan for my mental health goals and she followed through in a timely manner! Now I just have to do my part and go pick up my meds lol. She was even happy to chat with my mom who had a few questions about my mental health. I’m mostly glad that she was nice and pleasant to talk to ?? 10/10.

The doctor communicated clearly and offered a great deal of helpful insight. I was seen right away at the time I was scheduled for, and the doctor made the experience feel a lot more comfortable than previous clinics I've been to. I had an excellent experience.

I have worked closely with Laurel for quite a few years, and she has been nothing short of incredible to have on my care and support team. Not only is she a skilled and knowledgeable nurse practitioner who has helped me manage multiple diagnoses, but she’s also wonderfully kind and easy to talk to- a must when choosing the right care provider for me, especially regarding mental health. As a trans person, finding affirming and effective mental health support can be a struggle, but I’ve had nothing but good experiences with Laurel. I cannot recommend her more.
Laurel has been fantastic. She is incredibly patient, empathetic, and knowledgeable. She is also an incredible listener. Her insights and guidance have been invaluable. She has helped me tremendously.
Laurel has been managing my medications for a few years. She is the best psychiatric provider I've worked with. She is caring, dependable, and very attuned to my needs as I've struggled with my mental health. She also gives great life advice! I would recommend her to anyone seeking evaluation or ongoing psychiatric care.
Laurel listened to all my needs, and we worked to find the right solution. She is sincere, thoughtful, and caring. The treatment plan she made was tailored to me - the information I provided and other things she was able to pick up on. I am in so much of a better place now because of her.
Laurel is a fabulous, caring, and seasoned nurse practitioner with passions for working with children, adolescents, and young adults - I have seen for Laurel for 2 years, with great results in my symptoms of ADHD, as well as my mood and anxiety disorders. I found her at a time in which I was struggling greatly in grad school, and I am so thankful.
Laurel is one the most skilled practitioners that I have ecountered. Laurel's understanding of complex mental health needs, her knowledge of medications, her ability think outside the box, and the rapport she had with my daughter resulted in much reduced levels of anxiety and depression.
I first sought a consultation for my daughter’s eating disorder. Our work with my daughter was so successful that I then hired Laurel to work with my son who is 15 years old and suffers from anxiety. She was absolutely excellent in all ways: able to connect with both children, sensitive to their needs, demonstrated a sense of humor when needed and very responsible about meeting appointment times. I recommend her Laurel Edinburgh, NP with high confidence.
Laurel was thoughtful and responsive to all of my needs. She took additional time to hear out all of my concerns. Laurel asked follow-up questions that allowed me to further clarify, and I did not feel judged in the process. She explained all of the medication options I have available to me, helped me with weighing pros/cons, and was clear about how I can follow-up with her if I have more questions after our appointment. Laurel even introduced me to her dog, Bailey! Bailey brought an extra comfort to her virtual office space.
Laurel is great with children and adolescents. My child connected with Laurel quickly and easily. Laurel is empathetic. She listens without judgment, understands my daughter's needs and genuinely cares about her well-being. Highly recommend!
Ms. Edinburgh was able to find availability in her schedule to see me right away. She tries to find dates and times to fit your needs. She was beyond helpful in all of my sessions. Finding coping mechanisms, talking strategies, and finding the right medications. I have been diagnosed with many disorders and Ms. Edinburgh was able to find solutions to my problems with each of them. She specializes with patients with ADHD and Anxiety. I have a wonderful time working with her, and would recommend her to anyone needing to find a provider.
Laurel is a fantastic clinician! She helped our family navigate the complexities of a child transitioning and was able to provide guidance on both the physical and the psychological issues to us (the parents) and to our child over a period of several years. She also identified an undiagnosed mental illness and provided excellent recommendations for medication treatment for this illness. She combines a warm heart and caring attitude with excelent diagnostic and treatment skills. Because Laurel was so helpful with our child we also sought her advice with our other child who had previously been diagnosed with ADHD but who hated his medication. She suggested a number of different options and he has finally found a combination that he likes and is much less angry and resentful about the need for medication treatment. She is really skilled at working with kids with ADHD to help them find the right medication combination.
