Getting to know Lauren Brown

Hi, I'm Lauren Brown, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner passionate about providing compassionate, personalized mental health care to individuals across the lifespan. I graduated with my Master of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and have dedicated my career to helping children, adolescents, and adults navigate challenges related to ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, and women's mental health. Mental health struggles can feel isolating and overwhelming, and I want you to know that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. My approach is rooted in creating a safe, welcoming space where you feel genuinely heard and understood without judgment. I believe that healing begins with connection—when you feel truly seen and supported, meaningful change becomes possible. I specialize in medication management but view it as just one component of comprehensive mental health care. During our time together, I'll take a holistic approach, considering how your symptoms affect your relationships, daily functioning, physical health, and overall quality of life. I'll explain treatment options clearly, discuss realistic expectations, and involve you actively in every decision we make. Your input, concerns, and preferences matter deeply to me. What sets my practice apart is my commitment to collaborative care. I don't just prescribe medication and send you on your way—I take time to educate you about your condition, provide practical coping strategies, and coordinate with therapists or other providers when additional support would benefit you. I want you to feel empowered and equipped to manage your mental health. Whether you're navigating a new diagnosis, struggling to find the right treatment after previous attempts haven't worked, or simply need consistent, reliable support, I'm here to walk alongside you. My goal is helping you reclaim your life, rediscover hope, and build the wellness and stability you deserve.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me means having a psychiatric provider who genuinely listens, values your input, and treats you as an equal partner in your care. I understand that starting treatment—or trying again after previous experiences fell short—can stir up anxiety and uncertainty. My role is to make this process as comfortable and collaborative as possible. Whatever has brought you here, you will be met with patience, respect, and a genuine commitment to helping you move forward. From our very first appointment, you will notice I am not rushing through a checklist. Our initial session is dedicated entirely to understanding your unique story—what you are experiencing, what you have already tried, what is and is not working, and what you hope to achieve. I ask thoughtful questions about your symptoms, medical history, family background, lifestyle, and current stressors, and I always explain why I am asking and how it shapes your care. The goal is for you to leave that first visit feeling truly seen and confident that your treatment is being built around you specifically. Clear, honest communication is something I take pride in. When we discuss treatment options, I walk you through how medications work in plain language, what realistic improvements to expect and when, possible side effects and how to manage them, and alternative approaches if you have hesitations. There are no silly questions here, and no judgment—ever. Follow-up visits are typically 20 to 30 minutes, scheduled monthly once treatment is stable. We review your progress, adjust medications if needed, and check in on your overall wellbeing. I also share practical strategies to support your mental health between visits, coordinate with therapists and other providers when beneficial, and remain accessible between appointments for urgent concerns. Consistency and continuity are priorities in my practice, because lasting progress is built over time with steady, attentive support.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process is structured yet flexible, designed to meet you where you are while giving you the comprehensive care you deserve. I believe effective psychiatric treatment takes both clinical rigor and human connection, and I bring both to every appointment. Our first session, usually 60 minutes, is an in-depth conversation where I gather the information needed to help you well. I'll explore your current symptoms—what you're experiencing, when it began, what triggers or worsens it, and how it's affecting your relationships, work, sleep, and daily activities. We'll review your full psychiatric and medical history, the treatments and medications you've tried, family mental health patterns, substance use, trauma history, and the circumstances and stressors present in your life now. My diagnostic approach is thorough and collaborative. I may use standardized assessment tools to measure symptom severity objectively and set baselines for tracking your progress over time. I'll share my clinical impressions openly, explain my diagnostic reasoning, and make sure you understand what we're addressing and why. When we discuss medications, I provide balanced, evidence-based information about how they work, the benefits and realistic timelines, possible side effects and ways to manage them, and what monitoring will be involved. Follow-up medication management visits typically last 20 to 30 minutes and happen monthly once your treatment has stabilized. In these appointments, we evaluate changes in your symptoms, how well your medication is working, any side effects, adherence and the barriers you're facing, and your overall functioning and quality of life. While my primary focus is medication management, I weave supportive counseling and mental health education naturally into our sessions. When psychotherapy would clearly help you, I work collaboratively with therapists to keep your care coordinated. My ultimate aim is for you to feel genuinely supported and steadily moving forward.
