Getting to know Dr. LeShelle Woodard

LeShelle, can you briefly walk us through your story - how you started and how you got to where you are today. I started with a loan from a friend, which I used to rent and furnish a single office and waiting room. I worked nights and weekends while maintaining a full-time consulting position and a part-time teaching role at UMass Boston. At first, things were painfully slow, and I joked that I might have been better off pursuing another goal, like horseback riding lessons. Despite my frustration, I kept the other jobs, squeezing in clients until I earned enough to resign from consulting. By then, I had hired my first employee, who initially inquired about subletting but I convinced her employment would be mutually beneficial. A former student, who had progressed in her graduate psychoanalysis studies, began seeing clients and joined us. As they say, the rest was history. Great, so let's dig a little deeper - has it been an easy path and what challenges did you overcome? Despite initial concerns, maintaining clientele hasn't been a problem. Many clients partner with us long term, others seek periodic support. My biggest challenge was insidious; I didn't see it in the early years. A lack of business training is a glaring shortcoming in psychology graduate programs. Most schools, even those focused on clinical training, don't address business skills. As I prepared to start Life Enhancement, I gathered books on the business side of psychotherapy. I hold a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Massachusetts, which gave me a strong clinical foundation but little business preparation.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am an integrative care provider. This means that in addition to many of the traditional and newer psychotherapies, I offer other services that may enhance your ability to address whatever goals we may set in our work together. Examples include biofeedback, mental health nutrition education, breath work and mindfulness techniques.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My clients love that our work is a true partnership. I work hard to get to know my patients and the experiences or other variables that bring them to me. Together we decide what aspects of care are a good fit and personal growth goals.
