Getting to know Dr. Linda Mays

I am a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who researches, counsels, teaches, supervises, and consults in independent practice. I received my Florida psychiatric nurse practitioner license in 2014 and my Kentucky psychiatric nurse practitioner license in 2015. My degrees include B.S.N. in Nursing, M.S.N. in Clinical Research Management, Post Masters Certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and D.N.P. in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. My education and clinical training integrate lifespan applications with children, pregnant women, adolescents, adults, seniors, and the very old. I have specialty training through the Trauma Resolution Center in trauma incident reduction. In addition to my private practice, I am a clinical supervisor, mentor, and preceptor for graduate nurses and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner students. My graduate faculty appointments have included master’s programs with the University of Miami, Nova Southeastern University, St. Thomas University, and Walden University. I am a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and the Florida Nurses Association. The most current scientific discoveries are used to guide my clinical practice. My research interests include evaluating the effects of tobacco smoke on medication efficacy and increasing police office empathy towards mentally ill citizens. My clinical practice includes guiding patients through life-transition issues: pregnant women and their unborn children, children, adolescents, young adults, middle-aged adults, seniors, and the very old. Integrative treatment approaches include counseling and recommendations for herbal preparations, aromatherapy, vitamins and minerals, medication management, brief and continuing psychotherapy, spiritual counseling, and psychoeducation.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During each visit, you will be expected to provide a brief, detailed description of your symptoms. If you are taking medications, bring the pill bottles to the visit with you. After a comprehensive discussion regarding your past and current history, a diagnosis will be formulated. The visit includes psychotherapy and medication or herbal preparation recommendations. When appropriate, patients are referred to other healthcare providers.
