Getting to know Loren Neiswender

I am a nationally certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with more than 10 years of clinical experience, with particular expertise in working with children and adolescents. I also provide psychiatric care across the lifespan and treat a broad range of mental health conditions. My nursing education began at Loma Linda University, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in nursing. I then completed my master’s degree and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner training at California State University, Long Beach, and later earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from UCLA. I believe mental health care works best when medication is used thoughtfully and as part of a larger treatment plan that may include therapy, lifestyle changes, family support, and other individualized interventions. Medication is one tool, not the entire treatment plan. My approach is collaborative, holistic, and individualized. I take time to understand each patient’s experiences, concerns, goals, and circumstances so that we can make treatment decisions together. I currently provide both in-person and telehealth services throughout California.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting with a new psychiatric provider can feel intimidating, so I want the process to feel comfortable and collaborative from the beginning. I am happy to arrange a brief introductory phone call so you can ask questions and determine whether I am a good fit for your needs before moving forward with treatment. I also understand that traditional appointment times do not work for everyone. Evening and weekend appointments may be available, and same-day appointments may occasionally be available when clinically appropriate. Please contact the office to inquire about additional scheduling options.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am the owner and treating Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Healthy Steps Psychiatric Services, my private psychiatric practice. When you establish care with Healthy Steps, you are working directly with me for your psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and ongoing treatment planning. Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. We will review your current concerns, symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, medications, previous treatment, family history, lifestyle, and your goals for care. From there, we will develop an individualized treatment plan together. Depending on your needs, treatment may include medication management, psychotherapy recommendations, lifestyle interventions, coordination with therapists or other healthcare providers, and family involvement when appropriate. Follow-up appointments are used to monitor symptoms, evaluate medication effectiveness and side effects, discuss progress, and make adjustments to the treatment plan as needed. Healthy Steps Psychiatric Services offers both in-person and telehealth appointments throughout California, with some evening, weekend, and same-day availability.

I honestly can’t say enough good things about Dr. Neiswender- this was our very first appointment and she made me feel so comfortable and understood. I’ve always struggled with anxiety and opening up, but for the first time, I felt truly heard and supported. She didn’t rush me, and listened, and really cared about how I was feeling. I left my appointment feeling lighter and more hopeful than I have in a long time. I’m so grateful I found her!
