“Dr. Rex was extremely helpful in helping me parse through some recent issues I was undergoing. I felt very comfortable being open with him and he was very receptive to what I discussed during our sessions. I really appreciated how he proposed ideas - I never felt pressured to follow through or adapt his way of thinking. Instead, it felt like he was giving me options or different avenues for solving the problem we were working through.”

Getting to know Dr. Luke Rex

Hey there! I am a licensed psychologist in California and New York. For NY clients, I only offer teletherapy sessions. A little bit about me - I returned to school at 37 after a career in entertainment across Sydney, New York, and LA. I earned my BA in Psychology with a Theatre minor from UCLA and my Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) from Pepperdine University. I've worked in community clinics, the LGBT Center in LA, and dual diagnosis treatment centers, facilitating 4,000+ psychodrama groups in IOP, PHP, and residential settings. Most recently, I spent two years at an adolescent residential treatment center providing individual therapy, family therapy, and parent coaching. - - - - - - - Dr. Rex blends his creative artistry in film and theatre with a deep understanding of psychology, specializing in adolescents, families, young adults, and adults. His therapeutic approach integrates psychodynamics, EFT, ACT, experiential methods, and mindfulness, emphasizing a person-centered and humanistic-existential perspective.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I focus on the present moment in therapy, working intuitively and using humor, silence, and deep presence to foster insight. I don’t typically assign worksheets or homework; instead, I guide clients toward self-awareness through experiential exploration. My approach is supportive yet challenging, helping clients connect with their emotions and grow in meaningful ways. Thank you for reading my profile—I look forward to working with you!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am super easy to work with and will make you feel very comfortable. I keep the onboarding documentation simple and to the point. The first couple of sessions involve me gathering intake information, but I leave room for process and connection. My recommendation is for weekly sessions, then after a period that feels right, drop down to bi-weekly, monthly, then as needed. My approach varies depending on who I am working with. I can be very direct when needed, but also utilize a lot of silence and ask clarifying questions, engage in reflection of feelings, as well as solution-focused and psychodynamic methods of working. I can integrate experiential, mindfulness, and action-based methods to help clients access emotions, deepen self-awareness, and express themselves authentically in a supportive, transformative space. - - - - Administratively, please note after booking with me - Zocdoc will send you a text message requesting you to fill out a brief demographic form to their platform. Since I work through the ALMA platform, keep an eye out for an email from ALMA to complete the onboarding process (e.g., privacy doc, informed consent, more detailed intake form, etc). I look forward to working with you!

Dr. Rex was very professional and super informative to help me deal with my ADHD, anxiety and symptoms of depression. We were able to come up with a plan to help me realize symptoms/triggers and use methods and processes to see things from different perspectives. Through practice I’ve been able to use these in my daily life both personally and professionally to help manage and alleviate my anxiety.
