Lyann De la Garza, CCC - SLP

Speech-Language Pathologist
IL
Hello! I'm Lyann. I became a speech-language pathologist (SLP) in 2016. I became an SLP because I was interested in the field of special education. I have an aunt who was diagnosed with Down syndrome, and I wanted to be able to help others who needed a voice to be heard. I love working with children and adults. I have been working with children since the age of 14 as a Sunday school teacher, and I have a passion to work with children. I love that in this career I am able to work with children and adults who have difficulty with communication, swallowing, cognition, and social communication. I enjoy every minute of my job and treat others as if they were part of my own family. I love to see the smile on the parents' faces when they hear their child communicate for the first time. That is what this career is all about. I have been taught visual phonetics, which I have seen help many of my patients working on articulation skills. I have worked in outpatient rehab facilities, nursing homes, and hospital settings. My clinical style is individualized/personalized. I like to follow the child's lead. In addition, I do like routine-based sessions in which I have created structure. Parent teaching and involvement is very important when working with my clients. I want to make sure everyone who is working with the child is working as a team to reach the child's goals.
