Getting to know Dr. Lynsey Hinnenkamp

Dr. Lynsey Hinnenkamp is a psychologist at Bryant West Psychology, PLLC in New York, NY. She works with adults from diverse backgrounds and identities, providing both individual and couples therapy. She offers both in-person and virtual consultations. She focuses on individuals who have experienced trauma, including military, childhood, sexual, physical, complex, and religious trauma. She also supports people navigating grief and loss, relationship challenges, anxiety and mood concerns, life transitions, sexuality, and identity-related questions. In addition to individual therapy, she enjoys working with couples to identify recurring conflict cycles, strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and deepen emotional and physical connection. Dr. Hinnenkamp places great emphasis on the therapeutic relationship, believing that a genuine, deep, and collaborative connection is often central to healing. She offers a space that feels warm, thoughtful, and emotionally safe, where patients can explore difficult experiences with curiosity and care. Her work is grounded in a holistic, non-pathologizing perspective that honors how each person's unique lived experiences shape their movement through the world. Dr. Hinnenkamp earned her doctoral degree in counseling psychology from the University of Tennessee. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the James J. Peters Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She is also a member of the American Psychological Association.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have lived in many states along the east coast, from New York all the way down to Louisiana. I earned my PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, after completing a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Loyola University and studying psychology, public health, and gender and sexuality studies at Tulane University. I completed my doctoral internship at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx, where I worked with Veterans and their families. I have also provided psychotherapy and assessment across the lifespan in community mental health, college counseling, hospital, and school settings. Wherever you find yourself right now, it would be a privilege to support you in the process of understanding, healing, and growth. I invite you to reach out if you would like to explore how we might work together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My therapeutic approach is integrative and relational, drawing from interpersonal and emotion-focused frameworks while incorporating evidence-based treatments when helpful, including DBT, ACT, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE). My work with couples draws from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) – approaches that help partners slow down, recognize the cycles they get caught in, and better understand the emotions and needs beneath their conflicts. Together, couples learn to communicate more openly, respond to each other with greater empathy, and rebuild trust and connection. I do not view therapy as a one-size-fits all, and therefore, we will work together to find a path towards healing that fits your unique values, goals, and lived experiences. Wherever you find yourself right now, it would be a privilege to support you in the process of understanding, healing, and growth. I invite you to reach out if you would like to explore how we might work together.

More information on payments and coverage

Bryant West Psychology works with most insurance plans (whether in-network or out-of-network) to make the financials easy, hassle-free, and paper-work-free for you. We can bill your insurance for you, and you can pay us any deductibles and co-pays by credit card or through Zelle, as well as the old-fashioned ways, such as check or cash. In-Network: Our clinicians are providers in the following networks: Aetna and its affiliated insurances (Allied Benefit Systems - Aetna, Christian Brothers Services - Aetna, Health Scope - Aetna, Meritain, Nippon, Trustmark) and student health insurance at NYU, Columbia, New School, and Fordham. Your in-network insurance company sets our fees, co-pays, and deductibles, making our services more affordable. We will discuss this with you. Out-of-Network: We bill all insurance companies, such as United Health Care, Oxford, Cigna, Blue Cross/Shield, and Beacon (to name a few). Depending on your plan, your insurance may pay up to 80% of our fee (and sometimes more). We will do our best to work with you to make payment arrangements that won't break the bank—that is, your bank.
