Getting to know Dr. Magdalene Coleman

I am a dual board-certified family and psychiatric nurse practitioner with years of comprehensive experience in delivering exceptional healthcare services. My deep dedication to compassionate care, patient advocacy, and the use of evidence-based practices motivates me as a healthcare professional. I focus on managing chronic diseases, providing mental health care, and offering crisis intervention-all aimed at enhancing the lives of my patients through a comprehensive, patient-centered approach. Throughout my career, I have acquired extensive experience in diverse healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and outpatient facilities. This varied background has enabled me to cultivate a profound comprehension of the intricacies involved in patient care, especially in addressing both physical and mental health issues. I have had the opportunity to work with patients dealing with chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, mental health challenges, and heart disease, assisting them in managing their illnesses effectively through medication management, lifestyle changes, and ongoing monitoring. I hold a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from Wilmington University, where I concentrated on enhancing my leadership abilities and knowledge in healthcare delivery. I earned a Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization in Family Health Nursing from Lehman College, CUNY, and completed a Post-Master's Certificate in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from Wilkes University. Additionally, I hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mercy University.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In our first session, we'll focus on getting to know each other, discussing your reasons for seeking therapy, and establishing a comfortable and collaborative relationship. I'll explain my approach, answer any questions you have in mind, and we'll work together to identify your goals and develop a plan of care moving forward. Usually the initial session is about building a foundation for our work today and setting the stage for your growth and progress.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session involves a comprehensive and collaborative approach to understanding your mental health challenge and concerns. During our initial sessions, I'll conduct a thorough diagnostic evaluation, which may include discussing your symptoms, medical history, personal experience, and the disease trajectory of your diagnosis. This helps me develop a personalized understanding of your needs and create an effective treatment plan. In subsequent sessions, we may use talk therapy, such as supportive therapy, CBT, mindfulness-based therapy, solution-focused therapy, or evidence-based approaches, to address challenges to work toward your therapy goal. I will also monitor your process, adjust the treatment plan, and provide medication management if required or prescribed. Throughout our sessions, I'm committed to creating a supportive and non-judgmental space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and concerns. Together, we'll work to empower you with the tools and strategies necessary to achieve optimal mental well-being.
