Getting to know Dr. Mara-Joanne Derinor
Mara-Joanne Derinor DNP, PMHNP-BC, earned her undergraduate degrees in Nursing and Dance from Barry University. During her senior year, she studied nursing abroad in Haiti, which confirmed her calling to become a nurse. She went on to earn her master’s degree in Psychiatric Mental Health from Frontier Nursing University, where she also trained and volunteered at UF Health Psychiatric Hospital in Gainesville. Dr. Derinor later completed her doctorate at Frontier.
“I always had a passion for mental health,” she shares. “I knew I wanted to specialize in it and be the difference I want to see.”
Fluent in Haitian Creole, Dr. Derinor is dedicated to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly within Caribbean and Afro communities. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, writing, reading, dancing, cooking, and relaxing at the beach. She strives to be a light and a positive force for both her patients and her community.
What should a new client know about working with you?
My patients and their needs come first, second, and third. I provide evidence-based care for my patients. My focus areas of practice are anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, sleep disorders, PTSD, psychotic disorders, and psychotherapy.
The tone/environment that I create for my sessions is a relaxing and therapeutic tone/environment. I speak in a low and calming voice. Many patients describe my voice as relaxing. I strive to create the feeling of an oasis during each session.
Goal setting with patients is always patient centered. I want all of my patient to always feel seen and heard. I do not make any decisions without the approval or acknowledgement of my patients. I provide thorough education when my patients and I are making clinical decisions.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
During our first session I will take the time to conduct a thorough assessment and learn all about you. The first session typically lasts about 45 minutes to an hour. I will ask about your psychiatric history, hospitalization history, medical history, family history, and social history just to name a few. The first session is tailored to learning all about the patient and their desires/needs. We will go over any diagnoses and create a treatment plan that is specifically tailored to your interests, needs, and desires.

Very pleasurable experience. Idid not feel rushed or uncomfortable at all. She was very knowledgable and not pushy. The appointment felt more like I was talking to a friend that also happened to be a doctor. I did not feel judged or like I was annoying her at all wich is contradictory to my usual experienes with doctors. I am very happ and hope I get tongontinue seeing Dr. Derinor on a permanent basis!

The visit was great from start to end! This is my first time using an online medical service and from this experience I would definitely do it again! My provider Mara was non judgmental and that made it easy for me to discuss my issue. I was looking to go somewhere quick since I work a lot and have kids under five and this was the place to do it.
