Getting to know Dr. Marc Diener
I am a New York State Licensed Psychologist, specializing in individual therapy and psychological testing. I also provide consultation services for statistics, research methods, and writing.

In addition to my current practice in Cedarhurst, NY, I am a Full Professor in the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at Long Island University—Post. As part of my role in the program, I supervise the clinical work of doctoral students.
Prior to moving to New York, I maintained a private practice in the Washington, DC area. From 2007 to 2012, I was an Assistant Professor in the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at the American School of Professional Psychology, Washington, DC.
I earned my PhD from the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University. As part of my training, I served as a doctoral extern at Bellevue Hospital. I completed both my internship and postdoctoral fellowship at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center/University Hospital of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
I have been conducting research on psychotherapy and/or personality assessment for the past 11 years, and I have presented and published widely.
My presentations include 35 peer-reviewed and invited talks, almost all at national and international professional conferences.
I have published 10 peer-reviewed articles in professional journals, as well as six book chapters and other publications.
As part of my scholarly activities, I currently serve as a Consulting Editor for three journals, and I have been an ad hoc reviewer or Consulting Editor for six additional journals in the past.
What should a new client know about working with you?

You have a lot of choices in selecting a therapist and psychologist. What's different about me and my practice? (1) You're getting an expert: I have a PhD in Clinical Psychology, I completed advanced training in my postdoctoral fellowship, and I trained at prestigious institutions, including Bellevue Hospital and St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center/University Hospital of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. (2) I am an internationally recognized scholar in psychotherapy research, personality assessment, and psychotherapy integration (synthesizing techniques and approaches from a number of widely used psychotherapy methods). (3) I provide a variety of high-quality psychology services, including Psychotherapy and Psychological Testing.
(4) I have a number of specialty areas in my practice, including therapy for substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and relationship difficulties, as well as testing for Learning Disorders, ADHD, personality assessment, and comprehensive diagnostic evaluations.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
A typical session starts with my checking in about how you are doing and your progress over the past week. Depending on the type of therapy we have decided to use together, I will either set the agenda for the session (for example, if we are using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy [CBT]) or encourage you to select the focus for the session (for example, if we are using psychodynamic or supportive-expressive therapy). I monitor your progress throughout, and I check in with you to ensure that you are satisfied with the treatment plan we have developed. I want to make sure that you are getting treatment that meets YOUR needs and is working effectively.
