Maria McGowan grew up surrounded by corn fields in eastern North Carolina. She got her undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. It was there that she started on her path to dermatology, first as a filing assistant and courier in a dermatology clinic. After moving to Savannah, Georgia, she continued working in dermatology as a medical assistant. At the same time, she pursued post-baccalaureate studies at Armstrong Atlantic State University and dabbled in women’s flat track roller derby. She then attended medical school at Mercer University School of Medicine. After medical school, she completed her preliminary internal medicine internship at Loma Linda University. Dr. McGowan completed her residency in Dermatology at Loma Linda University. She served as Chief Resident in her final year and was awarded recognition from her peers for dedication to quality improvement, mentoring, and leadership. Following the footsteps of her ancestors from the Hero islands, she came to Vermont. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, biking, skiing, and playing in the water with her high school sweetheart and their two sons.
