Getting to know Dr. Marissa Fruchter

I’m a licensed clinical psychologist working with individuals and couples to help them better understand themselves, their feelings, and their relationships. I prioritize building trusting and collaborative therapeutic relationships. By creating a warm and nonjudgmental environment, I’ll help you feel safe and comfortable to be yourself, express the full range of your thoughts and feelings, and explore new ways of being. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. You’re the expert on yourself, and my role is to help you identify what has made you you and what patterns might be holding you back.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Many individuals come to me to address difficulties related to anxiety, depression, relationships, and life transitions. I also see many survivors of sexual or childhood trauma. The couples I work with often struggle with communication, connection, or figuring out how to approach big relationship milestones together, like moving in or getting married. I approach therapy through a broadly psychodynamic lens, which means that I will help you understand your emotions and behavioral patterns by processing experiences, relationships, and reactions throughout multiple periods of your life, past and present. In creating this self-awareness, we create more space to move through your life with intentionality instead of feeling like you’re on autopilot. You’ll also develop new insights that may help you challenge your beliefs about yourself, others, or the world around you in useful ways. In addition, I often incorporate aspects of CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy). This may include engaging in mindfulness exercises or learning specific skills (e.g., grounding skills for managing panic attacks). I tailor treatment and my approach based on each individual I meet with and the specific issues they would like to address in therapy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Feeling good about the relationship with your therapist is one of the most important pieces of successful therapy. During our intake session, I'll ask you questions to gather background information about your life and why you're seeking therapy at this time. You can also ask me any questions you might have about my expertise, approach, or what to expect from therapy. Together, we'll figure out if it feels like a good fit!
