Mark DeMatteo, LAMFT

Marriage and Family Therapist
1100 N Front St, #201, Philadelphia, PA
I work with individuals and couples navigating life transitions, relationship challenges, trauma, substance use concerns, identity development, and the transition into parenthood. I am especially interested in supporting people who feel they are at a turning point—whether that means adjusting to a new role, reconsidering long-standing patterns, building a family, or trying to create a life that feels more aligned with their values. My approach is collaborative, active, and relational. I believe therapy can offer a space to better understand the experiences, relationships, and broader social and cultural contexts that have shaped you. Together, we can identify patterns that may no longer be serving you, build greater self-understanding and self-acceptance, and practice new ways of responding to yourself and others. I draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotionally Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, and trauma-informed approaches. I may offer feedback, ask challenging questions, use humor, or gently point out patterns that emerge in our work. At the same time, I view you as the expert on your own life and believe therapy should be guided by what matters most to you. My goal is to create a space that feels safe, respectful, nonjudgmental, and genuinely human. You do not need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. We can begin with where you are and work together toward greater clarity, connection, and meaningful change.

Getting to know Mark DeMatteo

What should a new client know about working with you?

A new client should know that I approach therapy as a collaborative process. I aim to create a space that feels safe, respectful, nonjudgmental, and genuinely human, while also being active and engaged in the work. I may ask challenging questions, offer feedback, use humor, or gently point out patterns that seem important. I believe you are the expert on your own life, so therapy is not about me telling you what to do. Instead, we will work together to better understand the experiences, relationships, and broader contexts that have shaped you, clarify what matters most, and identify changes that feel meaningful and sustainable. My hope is that therapy becomes a place where you can build greater self-understanding and self-acceptance while practicing new ways of relating to yourself and the people in your life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My typical process begins with getting to know what brings you to therapy, what feels most important right now, and what you hope will be different as a result of our work. I also want to understand the relationships, experiences, identities, and broader contexts that have shaped how you see yourself and the challenges you are facing. From there, we will work collaboratively to identify patterns, clarify your values and goals, and build a shared understanding of what may be keeping you stuck. Depending on your needs, I may ask questions, offer observations, introduce new ways of looking at a situation, or help you practice responding differently to difficult thoughts, emotions, and relationship patterns. As therapy progresses, we will continue checking in on what is helping, what needs to shift, and whether our work is moving you toward the changes that matter most to you.
