Hi, there! My name is Marlene. I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a Master’s in Clinical Psychology from California State University, Fullerton. I also hold a Bachelor’s degree from the Dominguez Hills campus of the same university and an Associate’s degree from Orange Coast College. I completed my internship at Straight Talk Counseling, which enriched my hands-on experience in mental health. I’ve had the pleasure of working in this field for over six years. I specialize in supporting teens and adults struggling with depression and anxiety related to major life transitions, uncertainty in their study or career paths, or adjusting to marriage and or parenthood, among other challenges. Additionally, I have specialized training in using a cultural or faith based framework with clients who find these values to be important aspects of their lives.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In working together, we’ll explore and implement strategies that address your immediate concerns and give you valuable tools for navigating life's uncertainties. In regards to my clinical approach, I will go beyond just providing evidenced-based care. I’ll strive to make each session feel safe and productive, and to meet you where you are that week. Whether it means working on coping skills or talking about the movie you watched over the weekend, my goal is that our time together will have a positive impact on your well-being.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Teens: I focus on addressing the unique emotional and social challenges adolescents face. My approach combines empathy and evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and family systems therapy. I strive to create a safe and collaborative environment where teens can express themselves, develop coping strategies, and build resilience. By involving families when needed, I work to strengthen support systems and promote healthy communication. Adults: I focus on the transitional challenges faced during this stage of life, including identity exploration, relationship dynamics, and adapting to marriage and/or parenthood. I employ a strengths-based and collaborative approach, utilizing CBT and mindfulness to address therapy goals. I create a supportive environment where adults can navigate their experiences, develop coping skills, and enhance their self-awareness. In taking a cultural framework, we explore how cultural values and norms can impact well-being, both positively and negatively. We also discuss how generational trauma can intersect with those cultural values and norms, as well as how mental health is viewed in general. In taking a faith-based lens, we explore how one's emotional well-being and spiritual life are connected. We'll discuss how faith can be a powerful tool in the therapeutic process by helping clients find hope, purpose, and resilience in difficult times.
