Getting to know Mary Beth Hurlbert

I specialize in the unique journey of foster and adoptive parenting. For three decades, I have partnered with families to heal attachment-based wounds and build lasting emotional safety. I don’t just manage behaviors; I work to mend the heart of the family. If you are feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of the system or struggling to bond with family members, I offer a seasoned, non-judgmental space to facilitate real change and reconnection.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I specialize in helping foster and adoptive families move from "survival mode" to deep emotional reconnection. My approach is rooted in Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), a trauma-informed framework designed to meet the unique needs of children who have experienced relational loss. I believe that healing happens through connection, not just correction. My style is warm, steady, and deeply relational. Rather than focusing solely on behavior management, I partner with parents to address the underlying attachment needs and sensory processing challenges that drive "big behaviors." Together, we will work to create a felt sense of safety, mending the "attachment wire" and empowering you to be the primary source of healing for your child. I provide a calm, seasoned space to navigate the complexities of identity, grief, and the profound joy of building a family.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our session will start with a "nervous system check in". Addressing issues of low energy, higher energy or environmental issues and getting the vibe just right for us. We will move into a time of playful connection. Learning and practicing skills in a fun and interactive way that is safe for all. We will take time to address glitches or concerns by working through them together and doing check ins. We will end the session by reviewing what we have learned and agreeing on one goal to focus on during our time apart. One more check to make sure we are all leaving feeling safe and connected.
