Taking the first step toward improving your mental health can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. I’m May Gemilo, a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and I provide compassionate, evidence-based care for adults experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, stress, and mental health challenges related to chronic health conditions. My approach is warm, practical, collaborative, and solution-focused. I believe caring for your mental health is an act of self-respect and self-preservation, and my goal is to create a non-judgmental space where you feel heard, understood, and comfortable being an active participant in your care. Treatment is personalized to you—not just your diagnosis. Together, we’ll explore what you’re experiencing, identify what you would like to improve, and develop a realistic treatment plan that aligns with your needs, values, and goals. When appropriate, I combine medication management with supportive therapy and evidence-based strategies such as Motivational Interviewing, cognitive behavioral approaches, and Behavioral Activation. I also recognize that your culture, life experiences, physical health, relationships, and environment can influence your mental well-being. My goal is to help you better understand what you’re experiencing, strengthen your coping skills, and make meaningful, sustainable progress. Whether you’re seeking care for the first time or looking for a new approach to treatment, we’ll work together to find practical next steps that help you move toward greater stability, confidence, and well-being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to care is collaborative, open-minded, holistic, and solution-focused. I want you to understand your treatment options and feel that you have an active voice in the decisions we make about your care. I combine evidence-based medication management with supportive therapeutic approaches when appropriate. This may include Motivational Interviewing, cognitive behavioral strategies, Behavioral Activation, and practical tools to help you better understand what you’re experiencing, strengthen coping skills, and move toward your goals. I believe treatment works best when it is realistic and fits into your everyday life. Rather than overcomplicating the process, we’ll identify what is most important to you and develop clear, achievable next steps. As treatment progresses, we’ll continue evaluating what is working, what may need to change, and how we can support meaningful improvement while prioritizing your safety and overall well-being.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is an opportunity for me to understand what brought you to care, what you’ve been experiencing, and what you would like to change or improve. You’ll have space to share your concerns in a straightforward, non-judgmental environment where you can feel heard and ask questions about your care. I’ll complete a comprehensive psychiatric assessment, learn more about your mental and physical health history, discuss your current symptoms and concerns, and explore your goals for treatment. We’ll review treatment options together, including medication when appropriate, and talk through the potential benefits, risks, and next steps so that you feel informed and involved in the process. By the end of our initial visit, my goal is for us to have a clear and realistic plan that prioritizes safety, effectiveness, and goals that feel achievable for you. During follow-up visits, we’ll monitor your progress, make adjustments when needed, and continue building practical strategies that support your mental health and help you move toward the life you want to live.
