Getting to know Dr. May Tsui
I am a board-certified psychiatrist with over 20 years of experience in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. I earned my Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University and completed my psychiatry residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. I take the time to understand your background, history, and reasons for seeking treatment. Together, we will work collaboratively to develop a personalized treatment plan.
I am a strong proponent of psychotherapy and the transformative power of the therapeutic relationship. With expertise in psychopharmacology, I believe medications can be an important tool to reduce suffering and improve quality of life.
I provide services in both English and Mandarin Chinese.
My areas of expertise include:
- Anxiety
- Panic Disorder
- Depression
- Bipolar Disorder
- Cultural Issues
- Asian-American Identity/Acculturation Issues
- Women's Issues
- Professional/Career Issues
- Family Issues
- Relationship Issues
- Special Needs Parenting
In my experience, individuals dealing with chemical dependency and addiction benefit most from dedicated care by treatment specialists. If you are struggling with these issues, I will provide resources and referrals to specialists, as I do not have specialized training in this area.
**PLEASE NOTE:** Please expect a call from the office shortly after booking your appointment to learn more about you and your reasons for seeking treatment. You will then be emailed forms to complete prior to our first appointment.
Additional information: I do not participate with any commercial insurances, Medicare, or Medicaid. I will provide you with a superbill that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement if you have out-of-network coverage.
What should a new client know about working with you?
The most important thing you can do is to speak freely and openly about whatever is on your mind. My goal is to create a safe, nonjudgmental space for you to do so.
I am trained in psychoanalytically informed psychodynamic psychotherapy and behavioral approaches; however, my style is best described as eclectic and adaptive-- I do my best to meet you where you are.
I am fluent in Mandarin and conversant in Cantonese.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
I typically perform an initial assessment over two sessions so that I can obtain a thorough history and understanding of what is bringing you in and your goals of treatment. The first session is 60 minutes. Each session thereafter is 45 minutes.
I typically see psychotherapy patients once or twice a week. For medication management patients, the frequency varies depending on the specific circumstance.

Dr. Tsui is intelligent, a good listener, very pleasant to talk to and really takes the time. I like analytical and listening people like her. It's the first time in my life I feel excited to talk to a doctor. I would highly recommend her.

Seeing Dr Tsui was my first experience in any type of therapy and she was a good listener, and asked thoughtful questions, and made me feel very comfortable. I'm looking forwards to seeing more of her.

I have been to 3 other psychiatrists in my life, and they have all been great. However, my experience with just 1 appointment with Dr. May Tsui was the best visit.
She and her biller have the most efficient and secure billing process I have seen across all medical offices. She saw me right at the time of my appointment, and she was very clear about the paperwork and payment. She listened very well, and she caught things in my story and connected them to other parts of my story. In just one visit, I have already learned more about myself that I didn't know from previous psychiatrists.
Highly recommended.

She was very kind and helpful even though there wasn't much she could due in terms of PTSD. But she was very thorough and polite and tried to help me find other doctors who could help.

Dr. Tsui was so helpful. She likes to see patients more than once before writing prescriptions or making recommendations, which speaks to her desire to truly help patients and understand their problems as opposed to shove them out the door with medication. We worked together to develop a plan that worked with my schedule and was not overly burdensome (some mental health professionals try to pressure you into coming once or twice a week even if you don't feel that's necessary). Her analysis of my issues was spot on and I feel so much better.

It was eye-opening. I had some misgivings because I'm new to therapy, but Dr Tsui made it easy to talk about anything. She has also been very thorough in getting to know what my needs are and help me set goals for therapy.

Very good. Smart and down-to-earth. Thorough, careful in her approach to medications. Comes off as responsible and sincere. Very pro-therapy and very on-time, which I love.
Great psychiatrist-but I wish she had a downtown office, which would be more convenient.

I'm encouraged by how long she takes to get to know you before prescribing a treatment [pharmaceutical or otherwise]. I didn't feel judged by her, and she didn't make me feel uncomfortable or bad. I haven't been seeing her long so this is really just my first impression. If you think she might be right for you, I recommend meeting with her to see if you think she could help.

Excellent. I have been seeing Dr. Tsui for over a year now and she has really helped me better manage and understand my anxiety. She is a wonderful listener and tries to help you understand the root causes of your issues instead of just handling out a perception. We ultimately agreed that I could benefit from medication but we also continued to pursue talk therapy, which I need more than I realized. Dr. Tsui is dedicated and insightful: and she has really sold me on talk therapy!

So so so helpful. She treated my postpartum depression and helped me through a low time. She discussed the pros and cons of different medications with me in great detail and addressed my many concerns. We also met for regular therapy which made me nervous at first, but later, it was a big relief to have someone to open up to. I think that she is excellent, especially if you are someone who is interested in learning more about yourself. She is sincere and compassionate. Also knowledgeable.

Dr. Tsui was a true professional. She took her time getting to know me and understand what's going on. She was compassionate and sincere and did not push meds on me like so many other psychiatrists do. I thought she was smart and likeable.

At first, l was nervous about seeing a psychiatrist because it's not really something that's done in my culture, but Dr. Tsui made me feel at ease right away. She is sincere, nonjudgmental, and concerned. I have been seeing her for therapy every week and it has been eye opening. She helped me through a difficult time and I feel like I'm better able to cope with the situations I'm in. I totally recommend if you understand learning more about yourself.

Very positive experience. Dr. Tsui is really great. I met with her three times for our initial consultation, and in the end, she made several thoughtful recommendations. It was refreshing to see a psychiatrist who does therapy as well. The psychiatrists that I saw in the past have referred me to someone else for therapy, which is an added inconvenience, but I appreciate being able to see Dr. Tsui for therapy and medications. She has really opened my eyes to a lot of lifelong patterns that I have. She is also knowledgeable about medications and told me about how one of the medications prescribed by my family doctor could be contributing to my depression. I highly recommend her.
