Megan Spangler, LMFT

Marriage and Family Therapist
3821 Front St, San Diego, CA
Therapist specializing in ADHD for individuals and couples, offering evidence-based support to improve communication, relationships, emotional regulation, and daily functioning. Trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to help people process and heal from traumatic or distressing experiences. Using guided bilateral stimulation, EMDR supports the brain's natural ability to reprocess difficult memories, reducing their emotional impact and helping clients move forward with greater resilience, clarity, and emotional well-being. While often used to treat trauma, EMDR can also be effective for anxiety, phobias, grief, and other experiences that continue to affect a client's daily life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy is professional, personalized, and grounded in genuine human connection. I believe therapy is most effective when you feel comfortable being yourself, so I strive to create an atmosphere that is warm, supportive, and free of judgment. Every client and relationship is unique, which is why I tailor therapy to your specific goals, strengths, and challenges rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. Whether we're working through ADHD, relationship concerns, trauma, anxiety, or life transitions, we'll collaborate to find practical strategies and meaningful insights that fit your goals. While therapy often involves exploring difficult experiences, it doesn't have to feel heavy all the time. When appropriate, I incorporate humor to help ease tension, build connection, and remind us that growth can coexist with moments of laughter. My goal is to help you feel understood, empowered, and equipped with the tools to create lasting, positive change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical therapy session is a collaborative conversation focused on what matters most to you. We usually begin by checking in on how you've been since our last session, discussing any challenges, successes, or important events that have come up. From there, we'll identify what feels most important to focus on that day. Sessions are tailored to your unique needs and goals. Depending on what you're working through, we may explore patterns of thinking and behavior, develop practical coping strategies, strengthen communication skills, process difficult emotions or past experiences, or practice new tools you can apply in everyday life. If we're using EMDR, sessions will follow a structured process designed to help you safely process distressing memories while building resilience and reducing emotional distress. My style is active, supportive, and engaging. I'll ask thoughtful questions, offer insights and feedback, and occasionally challenge unhelpful patterns—all within a warm, respectful, and nonjudgmental environment. I also believe that humor has a place in therapy when it feels natural, helping to build connection and make the process feel more approachable. Whether you're coming as an individual or as a couple, our work together is guided by your goals. Therapy isn't about having all the answers—it's about creating a space where you can gain clarity, develop new skills, and make meaningful, lasting changes.
